    Hi,

My friend and I are starting a company, we are in the creative/ design/ gift online business. For now we plan to run the business from the house/garage. We import most of our material from overseas and we are not going to employ anyone at least for next six months. We prefer to do everything our self to save cost and also like to learn the business. We registered everything by our self without using any third party or lawyer and accountant until now.

    So far we got:

    1)ACN
    2)ABN
    3)TFN
    4)Business name
    5)Trademark
    6).com.au domain

Our concern is what else we should be doing?

Such as should we be getting license for importing the material/ goods from overseas?
Should I be applying any licence related to our business nature? I do not want to missed anything and receive fine. We already visited http://ablis.business.gov.au/ to find licences, permits and other registrations that apply to our business, but we are not very sure which one we really need.

    Thank you in advance!

Thank you, is there anything else I should be applying/ getting?

My question was more than just import, I was hoping for more information.

    Hi Corey,

Seems like there is nothing else required to start a online gifts shop while I was researching (licenses/registrations)

You need to contact your local council about operating a business from home. Each council has it’s own regulations regarding what can and can’t be done, and whether or not you need to be registered.

Have you checked the business.gov.au starting your business checklist? Page 41 specifically deals with importing products, however the whole guide is useful to ensure you have ticked off all the standard requirements.

Missing from your above list is GST. Which, technically you only need to sign up for when your revenue exceeds $75K, but you may (and your customers may) feel more comfortable if you do.

    Hi There,
    You might need following:
    1. Barcode, if you products are to be sold in channels.

    2. Business insurance.

    Good luck.

Thank you Rohan! This really helps, it seems like there are a lot of things need to be done.

This might also be in the form of a shareholder agreement for your company.

    Good luck.
