Unfortunately sea Freight at Sydney just got more expensive.
Shipping lines are advising that they are experiencing heavy congestion at Sydney, due to “a combination of factors including industrial action”.
The congestion means the ships are being delayed, whether it is waiting to berth, unloading, or loading. This adds to their operating costs, and on that basis they are adding this surcharge.
The truly nasty aspect of this is the short notice of these charges, as they apply to shipments already booked and in transit
For example, ANL and CMA CGM are now charging a Port Congestion Surcharge for all containers arriving/departing Sydney.
Export cargo for all vessels (non USA trades) departing Sydney on or after 17th September
Import cargo for all vessels (non USA trades) arriving Sydney on or after 17th September
Export cargo for all vessels (USA trades) departing Sydney on or after 10th October
Imports for all cargo received (USA trades) on or after 10th October
The other shipping lines will be charging as well
Some are charging USD600 per container
This will impact all LCL and FCL shipments in and out of Sydney.
It may also mean that shipments already in transit will be hit with this additional charge.
Unfortunately we must pass on these extra charges.
For those shipments affected we will be advising any surcharges as soon as we can.
This surcharge is for Sea Freight Only, and only at Sydney. Air freight is unaffectedSeptember 14, 2020 at 5:27 am #1224095Jason RamageParticipant

yes, it’s a case of 2 oligopolies in the chain; Sea Freight and stevedores.
The IFCBAA (International Forwarders and Customs Brokers Association of Australia) has lodged a request for the ACCC to determine if this is price gouging and/or unconscionable conduct
