    Hi all

As stated in my intro post, I am looking at providing monthly management accounting services to small/medium size businesses in Qld.

I am interested in hering from other bookkeepers, accountants who do similar work for their clients and how they went about getting new clients when they first started their businesses.

I am also interested in knowing what challenges and hurdles did they encounter in the beginning and how they dealt with these challenges.

    Thanks in advance
    Jag

    Hi Jag,

As you haven’t had too many Accountants etc reply I thought I would tell you a little story…

I run a small business and am unhappy with my accountant of a few years. Now that I am actively looking for a new accountant, who specialises in small businesses I am finding it really really tough!

Where do I look to find a new accountant? Should I stay local? Is specialising in small business more important? Who is good and who isn’t?

For me it would be great if someone came along and let me know of the great accountant they are using. All I suppose this shows is that word-of-mouth is still king, especially in such an important business.

    Hi TizzBizz

As it happens we have some fabulous accountants in the Flying Solo community.

I recommend starting a new thread in this section of the forum http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/need-resource-got-good-referral/ detailing what you’re looking for, and asking for recommendations or for accountants who’d like to be considered to step forward.

    Good luck with your hunt.

    Hi Binjal,

It can be really hard to get the sort of work you are talking about initially, bookkeeping and business accounting has a very slow lead time from lead to conversion to referall. That said once you get started things grow very quickly if you are any good. You have no idea how many times I say to a client “let us do your regualr bookeeping work for you” and they turn it down only to call back 1-2 years later with 1-2 years of bookeeping to do!!

When i started out i used addressed direct mail to get my first 10 or so clients with pretty good strike rate, these days we get 60% from google & 30% from driving by our shop but still only 10% or less of revenue from referalls.

Ps we are great Small Business Accountants ; ) http://www.smallbusinessworks.com.au

Apparently Jag is an accountant who specialises in small businesses. And you’re looking for a new accountant. Perhaps you and he might, you know, hit it off.

    I love playing matchmaker.

    Hey Jag,

That’s why we wrote an Ebook – “Secrets To Finding Bookkeeping Clients”

We used just a couple of methods to help a bookkeeper get started in a town 1500kms away from us, where we knew nobody, and secured two good clients for him within the first two weeks

There’s more on our website StartBookkeeping.Com.Au
