SEO help! From Page 3 to ????

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

I am so frustrated!! My site http://www.icklekids.com.au was on page 3 for the keywords Educational Toys (a very competitive term). Then for some reason, hoping that it would increase my ranking – I tweaked a couple of things on my site and it ended up ranking on about page 11! Crazy … I’m kicking myself now!

The changes I made were really simple (well so I thought!), just changing the product name for example from – http://www.icklekids.com.au/IKBT02.htm to this http://www.icklekids.com.au/Chicken_Shuffle_educational_toy.htm

So I would have thought this would help my ranking rather than hurt it? I also changed the blurb of each category to include my keywords e.g. http://www.icklekids.com.au/categories.php?cat=8 (the purple writing at the top) so am not sure why I’ve gone from page 3 to Google Siberia!!

My website lady said it would be my inbound links – but this hasn’t changed since my changes so not convinced this is the main reason. My content has definitely changed with sprinklings of my keywords in – so again, would have thought this would help rather than hinder. I don’t think I’ve overused the keywords, so my site isn’t banned by google as I’m still there (but on blooming page 11!!).

ARRRGGGGHHH! If anyone can give me clues as to why this has happen, I would be really grateful! Thanks in advance!

Hi if this happened in the last 3 weeks, welcome to Google Mayday update.

Google launched an algorithm change at the end of may.
This is the way it works:

Google is giving less preference to long tail keywords ranking site and sites with less authority … this means that if you used to rank for
“tickle me Elmo toys” for a minisite… now you will not be able to rank with a tiny site with 5 pages..

google want’s to know you are an authority in ONE topic…
just tool at the title of your site… is a mess…

Hi,

The frustration of search engines!!!

Two observations,

Did you use a permenant redirect from the old page to the new page? (If your 3rd page google results linked to one of the pages that is now gone that will hurt you bad!!!)

Google have had at least 2 updates in the last month or so – the first one got rid of the “Australia Only” searches from the main page – the second update was a new backend search engine called “caffine” (I think).

It’s possible one or both of these would change the order of results dispplayed.

I’d double check my first point though! Very important to do redirects of pages you move.
