I’m starting a new business and I want everything to be perfect. I already have a somewhat idea of the answer but I wanted to hear from the SEO guru’s on here on what they think.
I am starting a new business and I am wondering to what extent does an EMD matter? I would prefer to call my business an actual name and rank it or should I use an EMD on the service so it will naturally rank in the search engines?
I look forward to hearing some feedback.

I use both types across my portfolio, although all my sustainable businesses that I wish to sell one day, are branded names. I even have my branded names outranking the EMD’s because I put the focus (content etc etc) on the branded properties.
In regards to SEO, EMD’s are quicker and easier to rank if you have no idea what you are doing, and rely on default Google love to have you ranking.
If all things are equal and you have a brand name and a EMD then the EMD would outrank the other. That is if everything SEO wise is on an equal footing.
Personally I would not invest a huge amount of thought in to this, and rather focus on getting a good site with awesome content up.

Thank you for your fast response. I can get a EMD for my service but I want a business brand name. The only upside to an EMD is that it will likely rank quicker allowing me to build my new business faster due to organic traffic. The only problem is that the EMD is ugly compared to a proper brand name.

April 12, 2012 at 4:31 am #1100046Up::0Not my area of expertise – but, thought I would throw this out there… If you have both the EMD and Branded domain – would it help in SEO/ranking to build the site on the branded domain and direct the EMD to it? Would the “Google love” still be shown for the EMD when it is directed onto another domain, or does this only work if it’s actually the ‘website address’?
The above is what I have done but not sure if it helps/makes any difference.
