Hello all,
I realise skincare may not be a topic that’s at the top of your list, however, it is my area of expertise and I just wanted to say that I really feel for the up and coming brands that are struggling to piece things together. I remember all too clearly what it was like to dig my heels in and remain in an unhelpful industry. And, to be honest, if I had that time over again it isn’t something I would ever do from scratch again; it is that hard! It’s the, ‘if I knew then what I know now….’
Thankfully all that is behind me; way behind me and instead of being like most, I made the decision to help newbies in the industry. I don’t have a fear that it will take anything away from me. Maybe it’s because I have ultimate belief in my own abilities and in my own brands.
The majority of brands collapse in under 2 years! That’s pretty disappointing. I’m not sure if that is in most areas or if that pertains to the skincare industry only? And I’m not sure why so many collapse, however, whilst on this topic, I must say that Australia isn’t particularly supportive of its own. Perhaps that is a dominating factor for the demise of many businesses.I also came up with the idea to merge many brands together on one site and demonstrate how people and brands can get along together harmoniously, supporting each other for the benefit of all. I know you can find many brands sitting together on shelves in stores, but I don’t know of any other skincare brand (owners) that would dedicate a site online or a physical store that encompasses other brands. It will be interesting to see how it goes!! I’m willing to take the opportunity and see. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
What is it like in your industry? I’d be keen to know if the tall poppy syndrome exists or are you in a helpful industry?
Best,

It’s a complicated, some what expensive and stressful process. Nothing easy about it. Even more so now that the area of ‘natural/organic’ skin care has become so mainstream and the market is saturated with products (including fake natural/organic).
In line with what you’re saying there are a number of platforms/online stores that sell a range of mixed brands – though they’re mostly independent and don’t have their own brand.
There’s not a great deal of places where newbies can go for help, information or support (but I find that with many industries) and starting your own business can be a lonely place. I remember all too well how hard it was (and still is) to find someone to talk to who could relate.
As for the ‘tall poppy syndrome’ I find it’s more a matter of the small fish not being able to compete with the huge corporate brands. Why go with a small unknown brand when you can go with a giant well know poppy?
That’s my 2cents worth anyway :o)
