Hello,

I am wanting to start importing custom made home decor products specific to a brand I am trying to build. I have just ordered a first sample of a product that I designed but now after reading this forum I am scared! I have no official commitment or ties to this specific company other than having ordered a sample. Is it too late for me to bring in a sourcing agent/broker? Does anyone have a company that they have used and trust. I know everyone says to attend trade fairs.I am planning on going to the canton trade fair this year but I was really hoping to try and get started beforehand so I could claim the trip on tax. Any advice welcome please!?

Don’t stress about it just yet. Sourcing agents can be good at finding products at a cheaper price than you would yourself, but I guess it all depends on your negotiation skills. Also they may find products that you may not be able to get via Alibaba.

As you have mentioned, going straight to the trade fair is the best option. Don’t be put off by the prices they will give you at the fair. Generally it is largely inflated.

If you want to get started before the fair though, Alibaba & Global sources are the go to. Again, prices will be a lot more interactive if you have a greater quantity.

Don’t be afraid to arrange a Skype video conference! In China it is all about building the relationship!

I have a lot more to say but I’ll keep it for later. :-)

    Hi again Jill,

I have my fingers crossed that one of our experienced importers will chime in with some recommendations for buying agents.

One person you might like to check in with is forum member @Johny – check out his profile at http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/index.php?members/johny.34822/

    All the best,
