    Hi,

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions in trying to start a business in Australia on a working holiday visa. Specifically, we are an English couple who have a product that we want to produce and sell to the public in this country.

Do we just follow the same guidelines that an Australia citizen would, or do we need to consider other things too?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Victoria

To operate a business in Australia you must have an ABN (Australian Business Number).

To apply for an ABN you must have a TFN (Tax File Number)

As a visitor this link on the Tax Office website covers how to apply for a TFN as a visitor. But this is only the process for the Tax Office.

You will need to check the rules relating to your own particular type of visa as to whether or not you can start a business while in Australia.

    Hope that helps

    Wendy :)

    Hi Victoria,

As Wendy said, you should have received a TFN Tax File Number with your working holiday visa. With that number go to the ATO Australian Tax Office website and apply for an ABN Australian Business Number.
An Australian bank account might be handy, take your passport, Visa paperwork, TFN, and ABN to an bank.
    Good luck.

    Hi Victoria

It should be no problem as all you need is an abn and tfn. We use subcontractors from overseas sometimes and this is all they have and I have confirmed this is ok with the tax office. But as yours sounds like a more permanent business I would be calling immigration and checking!

    Good Luck
