Hi guys and gals, we are a small business specialising in ‘adult novelties’, selling online. We also do fun in home parties for hens nights, birthdays, couples parties etc.
We have alot of competitors but we offer some of the best prices according to our research. Our one problem at this stage is knowing where and how to advertise appropriately due to limited funds and our adult content.
Our target market are adults 18+ but not everyone is into what we sell so i am trying to work out a way to advertise and not offend.
Any advice would be great, thank you

    Welcome,

I believe some of your competitors may be lurking around here – maybe they can provide some advice.

I would suggest as a start the standard options such as a website, social presence and signature links.

Once you have these, you need to find a segment of the market, to market to. If you products are designed for 18-25’s, then facebook ads would be great as you can drill down your ad’s to appear to specific people (eg, single professional females, between 18-25)

    Hi Nikhol,

I think it is always a big risk in business to not do something for fear of offending someone. I am sure people get offended by telemarketers, real estate agents, junk mail, heck some of the adverts on TV these days would be more than enough to offend most prudes. The point is, if you try and please everyone (no pun intended) you will be the one who ends up unhappy.

I have seen companies spend thousands on their ‘target audience’ and I have seen companies spend thousands on scattergun approach, the bottom line is you need to pick what feels right for you.

The big yellow ones seem to favour the radio advertising right now (or is it just because I spend a lot of time in the car) but maybe that is an inoffensive method for them.

I think at the end of the day as long as your message is not crude, people will decide whether or not they want the services you offer, without too much offence, and let’s face it – if they were offended by your message they really are never going to be your customer :)

    Hope this helps

Thank you both for your reply!
Agentmail i love all you points and there are definately some ads out there where i have to cover my 4yr olds eyes lol.
We are making sure everything is worded correctly so noone has a reason to complain lol.
At the moment we are two friends starting out with little money so ive got abit of a headache from trying to find websites that allow advertising from other businesses.
Risk is the keyword here i suppose, take a leap, give it a shot and cross our fingers :)
David, ill definately look into Facebook ads, and when our website is finished ill add links and signatures also. Ive heard about business blogging too, so ill check it out! thanks again :)

Adult is very tricky, I have just launched a ralph/zoo style blog and am in the process of creating an 18+ video site featuring all the popular glamour models etc. It is irritating since you get shunned by Google, they even took down my adsense on the blog, and you adwords are tricky too… Paypal also snubs you and link building is a real task… Its annoying because it is not porn but falls into the grayspace of ‘mature content’

I have been finding success doing viral video marketing via youtube, metacafe, dailymotion and tying it all in with facebook and twitter

What is your site traffic like? Do you have an affiliate deal?

Oh geez thats no good and makes no sense as there is clearly much worse out there hey! So far on Facebook our ‘likers’ are steadily growing, we are trying to work out a way to keep our likers, some people join, realise what we are and ‘unlike’ us lol.
At this stage our website looks fantastic but stilll is not finished.
We have no affiliate deal as yet.
I hope things get easier for you, obviously people see “adult” or 18+ and freak out.
We had thought of using youtube as a means of marketing but was unsure if it would work but i suppose there is no harm in trying.
If you ever want to chat let me know, i might keep in contact to see how you are going if thats cool?

I would suggest magazine advertising (Zoo, ralph, Alpha etc for men) and (sorry, don’t know any 18-30 female magazines on hand – but there would be plenty!) promoting your business and products… don’t forget to include your web address and drive traffic to your site. I say magazine as “porn” has made it via magazines… although it isn’t “porn” it is hitting the same market and almost expected!

As for worrying what people think… Don’t even get me started.

Agent mail have I sent you my resume or something?

I have actually been a telemarketer, Real Estate Agent and a junk mailer! I am also a huge fan of fax broadcasting and sent at least 5 million faxes 😮

I will also mention that I was once called a “hawker” doing door to door sales in my early days.

I would also suggest looking into trade shows.

Just out of interest… is there a reason why there aren’t many retail shops for this industry?

I’m guessing it’s for the same reason that online purchases are sent out in plain brown wrapping…and that’s a strong marketing point on all the sites I’ve bought from ;)

    Hi Wendy,

So your saying – They use Plain brown wrapping to send out orders and this is a strong marketing point…

Yep, I’m now even more confused than I was before.

hahaha sorry, it’s been a long week. I meant that it seems to be on every site this big deal about sending out purchases in plain, brown packaging. As if that’s what’s going to clinch the sale. I don’t get it myself. I mean, if you’re buying the products, why would you care if someone in the sorting department at Australia Post knew about it ?!?

    Wendy

    Thanks for clearing that up.

I thought I was missing the “secret” to the Adult industry… Brown packaging 😮

I’m a bit slow on Friday nites, I guess we just have to accept just most business play “follow the leader” if it is right or wrong…

Brown bags trying to hide there products… now thats just plain crazy!

    I shall re-phrase the question…

Is there a reason why there aren’t ANY retail shops for this industry?

Nikohl – having thought about it a bit more, I would suggest setting up some Joint Ventures (example – hens party venue. When the client books a function centre of 20 people they get $50 credit to use on your website)

You just negotiate a deal with the function centre.

You could also look at other “activities” for bucks and hens “parties” such as skirmish, gocarting, harbour cruises etc or at least advertise where they do.

Another effective way could be doing up drink coasters and distribute them to popular bars and clubs (retailers love free coasters)… have all your marketing material out in the open and as a talking piece while people are getting drunk!

I actually think a shop front would be the best way to market the business…

Just create some hype and get people will come out of there comfort zone!

Hey Simmo thanks for all your feedback! I love the idea of joint ventures also :) We are still very new so so much to look at.
I love the coaster idea and magazines would be awesome!
Im really not sure why there are not many retail stores, ill look into that. For us due to our prices being so cheap we wouldnt really be able to afford one lol. Maybe oneday?
As for plain bags.. Wendy, i agree with you! our products are in there packaging, wrapped up nicely in pretty paper and an Australia post bubblewrap bag. I think it would look dodgy something being sent in a brown paper bag lol but as you mentioned, its working for alot of businesses. Some business also have another name that shows up on credit card statements so noone knows what you have bought. Discretion is obviously such a huge part of this .
Thanks again for your replies :)

yeah my stuff would be MA15 at max… just gotta find a way around the adwords filters…

What is your url? The method of advertising you use depends on your market. Since you are doing adult toys and parties I assume your target audience is female and over 25…

Print advertising sounds like an option: cleo, vogue, cosmo etc as do online ads on similar sights. Consider participating in the online vogue forums and similar ones. There is always adwords…

I would try youtube – do you know any mathew mcconoughhey lookalikes who will take off their tops?

I can help you out with making youtube videos, getting models, or getting facebook likes – anything online and I’m you’re guy – I can even get you’re video 100,000 views to make sure it gets seen.

Let me know I am keen to talk

well there are plenty of retail outlets for this sort of thing. I live in possibly the most conservative place in australia (pop120,000) and we have 4 outlets – just you are not looking hard enough :)

If you are thinking of affiliates through your website, remember the industry standard is 25% commission.

I think party plan will be your best bet

King party plans are def our best bet, just trying to work out a way to market ourselves differently to other companies..

Netboost seo, what are adwords and how do you use it?
our website was made by someone else, i have no idea about any of that stuff lol.
How are you going with your venture anyway?
Your onto a winner with the magazines and stuff!
How could we get more likers on FB? Promotions and freebies seem to work lol.
We unfortunately dont know any hot guys willing to get there gear off lol.
As for youtube, why would anyone want to watch a vid showing a bunch of sex toys etc? i suppose a half naked model would do the trick lol..
