Hi all,
I’m thinking of changing my website around a little.
Currently, I do not ask people to register before they place an order, however, I think I would like to capture data of shopping basket abandonment and I can only do that if I capture at least the email address beforehand.
I’m using a WordPress eCommerce plugin… I don’t want to have to save passwords so I want to make the sign up/register process very simple.
My question is, is it possible to do this? A simple registration with only email address and possibly first name instead of all the details plus password?I look forward to hear from you.
Thank you in advance!

MelHi Mel,
The short answer is that anything is possible as the plugin you’re using is Open Source so a developer can modify the required data for signing up. However, you’ll need to require a password. Otherwise, logging in to someone else’s account would be as easy as knowing their email address. Then you get access to all of their other details once you’re logged in.

Thanks for that!
Is it easy and safe regarding storing the passwords and email addresses?

MelAugust 6, 2013 at 3:15 am #1147266Up::0I like the idea only asking for the email at first (so you can information them of order updates).
Either ask for the password after the order is completed (so they can login to find out about orders or quickly make their next order) or send them a password (less secure) or in their order email give them a link to sign up.
Often the only difference between guest and registed login is the password field. I say merge them into the one, make their life easier and deal with the password later. Make sure you always inform the user on what’s going on though. Tell them they will be able to create an account later.

MelThe core question is what are you trying to accomplish?
You said that you “I would like to capture data of shopping basket abandonment” if that is all you want you don’t need an email address just use Google Analytics.
If what you want to do is re-market to them with the abandoned basket information then you need at least a email address and preferably also a name. You really need to get their permission or you are potentially spamming them. There are solutions like Barilliance but they are not cheap and free. There are others out there as well.
Be aware that making unsolictited offers to a customer that abandoned a basket may result in bad behaviour. There was another thread on this in the past – http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/selling-online/22056-abandoned-cart-have-you-tested.html there are others as well just do a forum search.

I didn’t like the idea of stalking customers…
Maybe you have any suggestions on banner retargeting?
Thank you.

MelAgain you need to figure out what the objective is going to be, what problem are you trying to solve.
There maybe WordPress add-ons that will create and save cookies and offer targeting based on search terms maybe some of the WP gurus can jump in. The way that most of the merchandising platforms work is based off search like the SLI Merchandising. But again these can get pretty expensive for a smaller business.
There are often many ways to achieve a result that you want but it would be better to understand the objective or problem.
Sorry I can’t offer anything better.

Hi MelContrary to what we ‘think’ about sending mails after people have abandoned their carts, I have been doing it for years in my just-sold business. It is a highly successful way of actually converting an order. There is plenty of data out there about businesses who have huge conversion rates by sending emails afterwards.
Firstly, we are assuming that the cart is abandoned because the person decided not to buy. From my own business experience that is almost Never the case. In fact they has a question that they needed answered, or gave up because of frustrations with the software or something along those lines,
I collect email names as they have moved through the cart and are at checkout. And if they abandon, I send an email. And I get almost a 100% conversion by doing that.
Throw out assumptions, just ask how you can help them.
I would say something like this… “I noticed that you had a pending order. Was there something I can help you with?”

How did you capture name and email address? Did you ask them to register before they could start shopping?
Thanks again!

Definitely not Before they start shopping. Just as per most sites. Go shopping, go through checkout getting ready to buy, then set up account. Then if the cart is abandoned I could still contact them.
