    Hello all,

We might have the business name, domains and ideas of the future in our mind or on paper and also maybe what content we think will work, but then procrastination gets in the way.

That’s what stage I am up to. I have the name, the ideas on paper and know of a gap in the market I am targeting (mortgages, information, tips etc) but then I stop. Why? I do not know the exact step to take to make it a reality. I have wondering whether to look for a coach, business planner, business partner and/or marketer.

Any ideas out there would be appreciated.

    Hi Peter,

I know what you mean. It’s hard to know where to start!! When I started my own business, the thing that made me feel as though I had “launched” was the marketing. I’m not just saying that because I’m a marketer! What I did was:

    – Launch a basic website (this also helped me get concrete about what I wanted my branding to look like and exactly what my services were)
    – Launch the social media
    – Get email marketing set up
    – Make the social media and website public to my circle of family, friends, and previous colleagues
    – Send out a bulk email to my existing contacts, announcing that the business was live

After I got through the initial launch phase where I was basically making things up as I went along, I got some education and coaching in the form of Small Business Solutions’ Cert 4 in Business course. It helped me work to more of a set plan and get a lot of the business admin side of things sorted.

If you’re based in QLD, you might look at doing the same thing: http://www.smallbusinesssolutions.qld.gov.au/content/sbs-standard.asp?name=build-a-better-business-workshop-and-mentoring-program

Alternatively, there could be a similar course in your local area.

This is my own personal experience, of course. Others would probably say something different, and I look forward to seeing some other replies on here.

    Wishing you all the best!!

    Angela

Angela has given you very good advice…There are many ways to grow a business and some won’t work.. They say the quickest way to succeed is to fail more. By doing nothing you have already failed. Mortgage broking is all about pressing the flesh. That is meeting as many people as you can. Sure some adwords campaigns might help, but most of your success will come from people you meet. Attend as many network meetings as you can. Try going meetup.com groups. Just get out there.

Having a business coach can help as a sounding board and to fine tune your pitch.

It’s a good question to ask yourself (and others). I’m curious to hear whether you have a simple business plan and financial model that maps out the journey. What revenue might your business produce and over what time frame? What expenses would be associated with that revenue production (including your time at market value). Stress test your revenue model and be conservative. It invariably takes more time and more money to get traction than you may anticipate.

Thanks for your contact Angela. Really appreciate the words. I like your process too. what is the name of your business please? I think the hardest part is that I’m by myself and have no 1 else to throw ideas off.

    Hi Peter,

Most welcome! It is harder when you’re on your own! That’s why Flying Solo is such a great resource – there’s always someone on here to give you a new perspective.

My business is called Big Idea Marketing (there’s a link to the website in my footer/signature for my post if you’d like to take a look at what we do).

    Warm regards,
    Angela

    Hi Peter

I would love the chance to have a chat? I also need a sounding board and seeing as we are in the same industry we might even be able to pool resources. Let me know whatyou think!
    Cheers

Angela is right….get the online side of things ready like the website branding etc. Ensure that you have full clarity on your business and have everything ready.

Then as Tony as attend as many meet ups and network events possible and share your business. The people you know will determine where your business goes.

But keep in mind things you need to put in place once it is up and running. Think about the structure to the business you will have absolutely everything.

I am currently in a company where everything is organised and structured right down to the cleaning rota. Raven, Adaptive Insights & Intervals run our business.

Sorry to talk far ahead but you don’t know how quickly a business could form! Next time you reply you could have three employees!

    Wish you all the best
