This is just a short note of support to any members, or those with family and friends, who are struggling with the shocking floods in QLD and Northern NSW.
Our thoughts are with you and we sincerely hope for a speedy return to some normality very soon.

January 12, 2011 at 1:19 am #1049861January 12, 2011 at 4:13 am #1049862Up::0It’s been pretty scary. I’m safe down here in SA, but my dad and friends of ours have both been in evacuation areas. Very pleased to say dad is through the worst of it, but our friends are trapped in a house with no power and just a street away the water is up to the rooftops. They figured being on a reasonable sized hill they’d be OK. I sure hope so!
To everyone else in flood-ravaged areas, my heart goes out to you and I hope this crisis passes soon and lets life get back to whatever “normal” will be.
So sad
January 12, 2011 at 8:49 am #1049863Up::0So far we have been able to get in touch with all but one of our friends and family.
The one we cant seem to contact lived in Toowoomba, but I’m sure he will be OK probably out helping others as he would.
After 10 years of drought it seems we have been given 10 years of rain.
I trust those wanting to change our climate are suitably impressed, with what God / Nature can provide.Those of us that are old enough have seen this situation happen before, however, this 2011 would have to be the BIG DADDY of them all.
All we can do is donate as much as we can afford, and pray for their safetyJanuary 12, 2011 at 11:28 pm #1049864January 12, 2011 at 11:43 pm #1049865Up::0Burgo, post: 61504 wrote:So far we have been able to get in touch with all but one of our friends and family.

January 14, 2011 at 1:12 am #1049866Up::0Thanks and yep just as I thought.
Been out working his little butt off.
He has a restoration business, there are only two in town.
The other guy has been asked by Suncorp to concentrate on the business area.
My friend has all the rest, houses insured and some uninsured.
He and his staff are all OK some of equipment has been damaged and no new equipment can get to him until the roads open ?????
We have a number of Queensland association members ready to go in and help as soon as possible.Talking to him on the phone you could tell how devastated he is at the amount damage and loss of life, but he is working 20 hours a day so he hasnt had time to think or dwell on what he is seeing.

January 17, 2011 at 10:31 pm #1049868Up::0Hi from Ipswich!
We were very lucky that our home is up high and wasn’t damaged by the flood waters. We were isolated for 4 days due to roads being cut off and had no electricity, land lines or mobile network coverage. That was very strange, we felt really stranded.
We have a rental property in North Ipswich which had about a metre of water through it, we gerni’ed it on Sunday and sprayed all the walls and floors with a bleach solution to stop mould growing. We also had to rip out the kitchen and vanity unit as they were full of sludge.
Like so many others, we have discovered we aren’t covered for floods by our insurance company, so will face some tough times ahead getting the house repaired. Our poor tenants lost everything, and had no contents insurance. They are staying with strangers in a 2 bedroom house (tenants = 5) and are taking it in turns between sleeping on the couch and the floor.
We have many friends who have lost the lot, it is truly devastating, but in this nightmare, it is wonderful to see the goodness inside people. People are coming from far and wide to help with the clean up effort, we have sausage stalls set up on the street corners giving volunteers free food and cold drinks, even one of my workmates who is going overseas next week for a month has offered her house to a family that she has never met.
Incredible stories of good will are everywhere, and amongst the devastation there is a glimmer of faith in our fellow human beings.Angela
January 17, 2011 at 11:34 pm #1049869Up::0Hi Angela – thanks so much for sharing your story. So glad you that you and your family are safe and I do hope your tenants get the financial help they need to rebuild their lives soon.
I have been amazed and encouraged by the strong Aussie spirit that has emerged again at last – it’s inspiring to see people pitching together. I hope it lasts long beyond this tragedy.
Take care of you.

Up::0Hi Angela,
As Karen said, we are all thinking of you. Hope that the clean-up continues as quickly as possible.
And I hope you got all your kittens out safely too?

January 18, 2011 at 11:31 am #1049871Up::0Hi Jayne,
all my kittens and cats are safe, thankfully it wasn’t our home that was flooded, it was a rental property we own. Our poor tenants lost everything, they didn’t have contents insurance.
Counting my blessings everyday that we are high up on a hill, many friends were not so fortunate, and the worst part is, some of the insurance companies are refusing to pay full claims, as they cover floods, but not ‘natural disasters’. What the heck is that all about? So depressing….Angela
January 18, 2011 at 12:07 pm #1049872Up::0Hi From Esk and Wivenhoe Dam – Esk had a flash flood that destroyed several homes and business but no lives lost
My house was safe the water stopped 20 mts from it, the cafe also missed the flood, mind you the dam wall would have been breached before the cafe went under, but had a 36hr blackout at cafe and with roads cut I was unable to get in to save anything so lost all freezers and coolroom stock, Insurance company will cover if power lost due to being turned off for safety to area or storm but will not cover if it was due to flood waters, still trying to get answer from energex. the flood has destroyed the water treatment plant that services the park and cafe so looks like I could be closed for up to 4 weeks,
Looking into what is available from grants, but it is very time consuming and I have been cooking for the evacuee centre since Monday. so trying to do most by internet.
something I didn’t think about when I put my hand up to cook, because I thought I did not have a cafe for a while, was the possible implications to the busines. cooking in a small town for the evacuees has two sides, if they like the meals then it is good for the cafe or reverse could happen but so far so good. It is a challenge to come up with 3 meals a day, with limited ingredients for up to 60 people in a school tuck shop kitchen- I am learning new skills daily -to date 9 days and at least 5 to go as they have moved all the meals for the emergency works over to me – cooking for the cafe is going to be a breeze after this
Take care all

Up::0Hi Dibs,
I was wondering how you and your cafe were getting on.
Good on you for getting out there and helping those around you – I’m sure it can only be good for your spirits and good for your business.
Hope the insurance issues get sorted out to your advantage too.
All the best,
JayneJanuary 18, 2011 at 10:18 pm #1049874Up::0Hi,
I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year from Brisbane, or Brisatlantis!
Fortunately, except for a very damp yard, we survived the Brisbane Floods intact.
There seems to be flooding across various states, and I truly hope you and your family have not been affected.
A friend of mine has started a movement called #bakedrelief to help flood victims and volunteers.
To find out more you need to follow #bakedrelief or visit the website http://www.bakedrelief.org.
Essentially you help by baking or delivering baked goods (water, fruit, hot meals etc.) to areas of need.
You bake and post a message on twitter you have #bakedrelief to pick up.
Or you post a message on twitter saying you can pick up from an area and take #bakedrelief to those in need.
Of course if you know someone in need of some sustenance, post a message on twitter stating the exact location and you must include the hashtag #bakedrelief. We want to help, please let us.Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2011,
Cheers
Heather Smith
