I am a writer based in Victoria. My main employer is based in Sydney and is doing a meet and greet with all their freelancers. I would love to go and meet the people I’ve been communicating with for the past year. I would have to get there on my own dime (most of the other freelancers are Sydney based)
Would my travel expenses be tax deductible for this sort of event? I’ve never had to claim travel expenses as I am usually a hermit at home
If there is sufficient nexus (link) in creating future business income then it will generally be claimable. However you may want to reduce the claim amount for some private element IF you stay on after the event for a small holiday for example.
