I need some help understanding discrimination.

It’s a word that is so flippantly tossed around these days.

Can anyone shed some light on the topic? How if impacts us as business owners – specifically when targeting certain markets in business?

How is it that a company like Curves can be a women’s only gym?

    Thoughts?

You always pose such interesting & thought provoking questions Leah!
In Australia we do have a Discrimination Act, which breaks up a whole heap of different areas to define what is/is not lawful etc. The Act also specifically outlines certain things that are exceptions – i.e. won’t be considered discrimination – and, actually quite specifically talks about services available to only one sex, and also specifically discusses the like of a club/gym for only one sex. So, the Curves example would be an exception and allowed to offer services only to women it seems.

The answer about how it affects targetting certain markets, would most likely be answered by what it is you intend to promote to them. The Act does say that it’s unlawful to advertise something that would be seen as unlawful in other parts of the Act.

If you have a particular question in mind, about some sort of marketing you intend to do – have a look through the Act via the above link… it’s actually fairly straight forward to see what you can/cannot do in so far as a piece of legislation goes!
