I have a client who has about 1000 client names and their phone numbers in a PDF document.

They need this transcribed into excel (one column number, one column first name).

PDF->excel converters do not work (nor to Word).

They are very keen to get this done ASAP.

Please PM me if you are interested and maybe a price/rate (in case more than one response!) and I will pass that to them.

    Hi King

    Try this:

In Adobe Reader, select Save as Text (if that option is available – my version is 9.1.2)
Give the text document a name.
    Open it in Word.
Replace all spaces with the tab character (Edit|Replace) ie:
    Find what: (press spacebar once)
    Replace With: ^t
    Click the Replace All button

Highlight all the text in the document.
    Start Excel.
    Go to A1
    Do an Edit|Paste

All data now delimited by TABs will appear in a separate column.

Without seeing the exact layout, its hard to tell. Here’s my source document layout, written in Notepad, saved as a PDF via PDFCreator:

    asda sdasd 123456
    sdfsd fsdfsdf 7853454
    zsdasd asdasd 653242
    sdgffdg sdfgsdf 345345

Cells can be merged together afterward if the spaces (converted to TAB’s that make Excel put each text element in a separate column) cause any undue output anomalies. :)

    Anyway, that worked for me.
    YMMV.
    :)

That could work but the original doc is a scan, not a native word doc.
I have tried several back converters to no efect :(
    Thanks for the input tho!

Well that’s a whole different kettle of fish!

What about OCR? (Optical character recognition)

My old Lexmark X1140 came with a fine OCR program – FineReader I think it was called – then the resultant text file could then be manipulated as I showed before.

So print the PDF, OCR it, and go from there?

    Worth a try perhaps….

If it wasn’t the weekend I’d happily do it. I quite enjoy mind-numbing data entry :) But sadly I’ve got way too much ahead of me to be able to put the time in as quickly as you need.

Perhaps try contacting some of the virtual admin members directly?

    Hi
I would be happy to do it for you, I could do it immediately. Cost would be $180. Let me know if you are interested? It would be done the same day you email all relevant info to me.
