Hi there, I’m just new on here and I find myself in a very troublesome situation at the moment. My website has been down for four days as is my host company’s website and I have absolutely NO WAY of contacting them…their phone no is disconnected…..

I want to change hosts but the sad truth is I have not saved my website files as I never knew how to do it…..I know, stupid with a big fat S but I can’t change that now.

So what I was hoping to find out from any of you tech experts (which I am absolutely not) is there ANYTHING I can do or ANY WAY of accessing my control panel files while the host server is down and not looking like coming back up anytime soon?

If it helps at all my website is http://www.scraplounge.com.au

thank you in advance for absolutely any assistance you can give me

You should be able to get all your pages back but they may not be the latest.
You should get one company that you trust to look after web design/web hosting/domain name needs otherwise if you just go for the cheapest individual component, you end up being responsible when it does not work and as you have found out pretty helpless.

Use a local company to where you live so you at least have someone to ring when things go wrong.

Let people know what host it was so that others do not make the same mistake.

yes July 27, 2008 is the most recent one they have archived

    http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.scraplounge.com.au

Save the files, either by saving the web pages or view source and save the code – you will need to make chages to some links as they refer to the archive site itself. Also save images and stylesheet etc.

I am not sure about if you can save the forum – those with more expertise may be able to help on this

The Gallery I suspect has been lost

So some, but not all may be saveable.

    Hi Rondelle
I have sent you a PM – I am aware of a web design / hosting company who has very recently ‘disappeared’ and all sites have gone down – I am hoping this is not who you were with as they leave a very long string of mess behind them that has been going on for years. I am aware of someone who is trying to sort this out – I will message you.

Hmmm, I wonder if I’m the only one who wants to know who this hosting company is.

A while back, a client came to me with a similar experience. The company (and I use the term loosely) had just disappeared leaving tons of clients in the lurch.

    It gets worse.

    They’re back in business!

There are two of them – both dealing with very similar target markets, and yes one is back in business – and apparantly asking for all ex clients to contact them so that they can make amends ….

    Hi Rondelle,

I came across your post last night and just wanted to let you know I am also in the same position as my site disappeared a few days ago, without a word from the web design/hosting company.

I’ve been contacted by another company who are chasing up all sites affected and may be able to help, but like you, I didn’t save the files so I don’t think my site will be saveable.

I’m furious with this company, how could they just walk away when they knew they were in trouble, some communication would have been good, if pre-warned I could have moved my hosting.

    Regards,
    Lorrie

thanks for everyone’s replies. Lorrie, it is the same company that we’re dealing with…..or would be if they weren’t so cowardly and just disappeared! Renee, I would love to share the host’s name but there are still so many businesses being affected that at this stage I don’t want to jepardise any slim chance this may be resolved any time soon…I will say this though, it’s the same Company that designed my website so if you check those links that King has added you will work out who it is. And Adam, I wish this company was the cheap option! They were far from cheap to deal with believe me.

King and Adam, thank you so much for posting those links to the web archives, I have copied the code so maybe that will help, thank you.

The main component is my forum, gallery and the Openads banner system I had running for my sponsors. I guess that side of it is going to be the problem.

For your sake (and everyone who is affected), I hope this is fixed up soon!

No-one’s perfect, but this sort of thing gives web hosting companies and webbies a bad name …

What I recommend to my clients is the following:

    • Static website that does not rely on a database.
    • *Backup all files each time a change is made to your website.*
    • Dynamic website that relies on a database.
    • *Backup all files and databases each day at the minimum.*
    • eCommerce/Forum website that is updated constantly.
    • *Backup files each day plus a mirror copy of your database.*

I hope everything goes well with those having issues with their website being down.

But remember this, even though you might not have access to your important files right now, if you use your email for business which most do, you will need to get your email working with another provider at least so you can communicate with your clients.

I can help you with this if you don’t already have a solution in place for this so private message me if you need help.

    Regards,
    Chris
