Raymond Samuel Tomlinson (April 23, 1941 – March 5, 2016) was the inventor of Email as we know it.

A pioneer in computer programming, he implemented the first email programme on the ARPANET system, the precursor to the Internet, in 1971.

Before Ray’s lightbulb moment, mail could only be sent to other folks using the same computer.

That wasn’t going to stop Ray.

His ingenuity soared and he overcame the problem by using the @ sign to separate the user name from the name of their machine… and it’s stood the test of time ever since.

I accept that as waves of email crash over the walls of your computer there may be moments when you don’t feel too kindly towards Ray…

But on the flip side, he created one of the best marketing tools for ANY business.

Quick, Highly Targeted and with Measurable Results.

Done right… it’s the Ultimate Marketing Medium.

Vale. I’d forgotten his name despite having read a book about the beginnings of the internet.

Hi Warren – very interesting to read up on this. I wasn’t aware of this story but certainly his ingenuity has transformed the way we work in the last decade+
    Thanks for sharing
