I’ve only ever heard this term (Silo Architecture) from Bruce Clay but it basically means building a website around a particular theme/keyword so that all of the information is centralised around that theme.

Apparently, having a website with mixed themes/keywords hurts your overall ranking.

Who knows. There’s so many fancy terms being thrown around these days.

    At a guess…

Information Architecture – I would define this as information as its presented on individual pages.

Silo Architecture – Not sure, but at a guess I would assume overall site framework/structure. (eg page/directory/sub directory hierarchy)

Website Information Architecture is based on hypertext markup language which is used for managing information on the interwebs.

Silos are steel or concrete structures, usually of Cylindrical Architecture, which are used for holding grain, such as barley. (Barley is used for making beer.)

    Hi Callum,
Website architecture is how your website navigation is structured. Siloing or how the information in your site is grouped around like terms is not necessarily the same thing.

If you have a shopping site for women’s clothes, its navigation structure may go:

Women’ clothes -> dresses -> maxi dresses -> individual maxi dress pages.

The same site could also offers a page that lists all red dresses that links from a red maxi dress page, a red mini skirt page, a red frock page, etc. That page would be a mini silo for searchers who included “red” and “dresses” in their search terms.

The silo approach has always resonated with me as it’s all about relevance, themes and focus.
A website section can be a silo as it covers a given theme and has pages within it that are focused on specific sub topics/keywords.
A human and search engine can gauge relevance and drill down as desired.
