Hi,

From a new members thread (Tim):

http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/new-member-introduce-yourself/646-introducing-sydney-bookkeeper-difference.html#post4183

What do you do differently?
or
How do you think differently?

… to produce a product or service superior to your competition?
and build a business more successful for you?

I have ethics in a business full of dodgy wannabes and snake oil salesmen?

That certainly can’t be underestimated… everyone’s a “web designer” these days!

With the magazine, we are the only one (that I know of) that caters specifically to the needs of Mums running businesses :)

I have had quite a few clients who don’t show up or change there minds after requesting individual parenting counselling. After seeing a mentor (organised through SBMS) I have been to my bank in order to provide Visa and Mastercard payment credit options to my clients. I am also producing a series of varied priced options for differing periods of time.

What do we do differently? Hmmm … I’ve spent 3 years working on this, so here goes … our Unique Selling Proposition is:

Business Writers Anonymous is Australia’s #1 Intellectual Property Development Company, built on a solid foundation of sales and marketing expertise, multi award winning creative writing and a unique understanding of the needs of the speaking, coaching and business development industry, BWA takes your fixer-upper Intellectual Property and renovates it into a luxury home, penthouse or mansion that will make you $$$’s while you sleep.

But what is most unique about us is, as our website says – that we won’t write just anything. We won’t do your annual report. We won’t do your newsletter. We don’t do press releases. We ONLY write stuff that makes you money.

We also practice what we preach – we’re the only writing-based company in Australia that offers a suite of information products for sale.

It took me a long time to get the USP nailed down. I was a writer and I was like … but I’m a writer. How can I be different to other writers? It took me a while to figure out the information product niche, that the stuff I enjoyed doing was less writing articles and more creating stuff that my clients were making money off.

So I started calling myself Australia’s #1 Information Product Creation Specialist. That was hilarious because it really annoyed a bunch of people (mainly other writers) who just COULDN’T get the mindset that it didn’t matter if other people were creating information products … I was the only one with the title “Information Product Creation Specialist” – and THAT made me #1 because there weren’t any others!

When I started BWA I changed it to Intellectual Property Developer … out of nowhere, actually … I just woke up one morning and said to my husband … “I should call myself an Intellectual Property Developer”. This has been even more successful that Information Product Creation Specialist, people seem to really just GET it.

I realised that person-wise, my niche was really speakers and coaches – because that is 90% of my clientelle. And it’s interesting, by saying we work ‘exclusively’ with that industry, we get a lot of people coming to us from different industries … because they understand what it is we do …

It’s strange how by getting specific, we actually got a whole lot more NON specific work …

I suppose what is really different about us is that we’re more of an exponential sales and marketing company, using the edgy theories of Jay Abraham, Jay Conrad Levison, Tony Robbins, Brain Tracey etc, who just happen to specialise in writing services.

LOL … like I said, I’ve spent 3 YEARS working on this!

I offer the gamut of writing, editing, design and marketing expertise.

That reminds me of a story … I was at a networking event when someone stated not-so-subtly, ‘I just do graphic design because I hate those sorts of people who are jacks of all trades and masters of none’. (That’s a paraphrase as I didn’t exactly write it down!) I sweetly replied that I’ve been blessed with a variety of skills and I love the synergy that results from harnessing all of them for my clients on a daily basis.

The other thing that sets me apart is I enjoy helping people. If I have a client who is in the aromatherapy retail region and have another client who sells candles, I make it my business to see if there’s a link that can be made. In short, I support my clients as they’re the ones who keep my ‘doors’ open.

One of the best proponents of this concept of ‘friends helping friends’ is Kelvin Eldridge, the founder of JustLocal. For more information about the Virtual Profit Sharing arrangement he created, visit my VPS page: http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/vps/member.php?rep=DRB3977.

Well, I’m sure I could think of some other USPs, smile, but that’ll do for a start as I really need some brekkie.

Three things.

First – I’m fast. Plenty of consultants will take weeks or months to analyse a business or come up with recommendations. I can do it over a weekend, and sometimes in a single business day.

Second – I don’t pre-charge. That is, I don’t get paid until the client sees the results. Initial meetings – free. Basic analyses – free. Advice – free.

Third – I aim for zero disruption to business. Other business improvers regularly call for massive infrastructure upgrades, wide-ranging procedural changes, and employees to attend all-day workshops. All of this takes time and resources away from doing business. I can retrain people in five minutes flat, one-by-one or in groups, and all policy/procedure changes either build on what came before or replace hour-long processes with one-minute versions.

Greetings,

The ‘different’ in what I do is that I make filing disappear, find documents, and give you back your information. I also find process guides for your your staff, and reduce your paper storage costs.

Hi @ all

What do I do different?

I reply fast and detailed.

I stick to what I said in the first meeting.

My designs are crisp and clean and are not just following the mainstream flavour of the season.

I am no primadonna when it comes to design solutions – I advise but I also try to incorporate the client’s ideas and – more important – knowledge he has when it comes to his business.

These last two things were mentioned and appreciated quite often recently by new clients which shows me that I’m on the right track.

Cheers
Astrid

What did I do differently.

I traded under a company registered name for the first twelve months.

Then I change the trading name to suite the market that I was after.
Then I increased my prices.
Then I had to use subcontrctors to keep up with demand.
Then I walked away from a highly profitable business.

Then I rebuilt another business in the same industry.
Then I change the name to suite the market I was after
Then I increase my prices.
Then i had to use subcontractors to keep up with demand.
Then I walked away from a highly profitable business.

Then I rebuilt another buiness in the same industry
Then I changed the name to suite the market I was after.
Then i increased my prices.
Then I had to use subcontractors to keep up with demand.
Then i walked away from a highly profitable business.

Then i started an association within the industry.
Then i changed the name to suite the market I am after.
Then I have increased the prices
Thats as far as I have got with this one

What i did differently was not even think about who or what was my competition, by being different I had no competition.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again … you ROCK Burgo …. I love it … so far I’ve …

I traded under a company registered name for the first 3 years. (maybe a bit long!)

And in the next couple of years I will:
walk away from a highly profitable business.

Woo hoo!

This is a simple one, we do what we say we are going to do! Thats it.

If I say I am going to do something for a client it will get done when I said it will. From calling them when I said I would to being on time for meetings to having a job finished on time every time.

It is amazing how many times we pick up clients who have left other firms who just do not deliver in the smallest way, like returning phone calls or emails. Amazing!

Cheers

Burgo, this statement had the ‘WOW’ factor: ‘by being different I had no competition’.

Nice …

Very impressive! Reliability is extremely important in business and life generally.
