    “So, what do you do?”

ever been asked this question. Well if you’ve ever met someone new in your life, I’m assuming you would have been asked this question.

    What did you say?

    “I’m an accountant”
    “I’m in sales”
“I’m work for a consulting firm”
    “I manage a clothes shop”
    “I clean toliets”
    “I’m a stockbrocker”

Although truthful (hopefully) I doubt that would of left a lasting impression with them. Let me just first say that this is just as important regardless of what you do!! You could clean toliets for a living. You see this is about creating more value for you as a person! Even if you hate what you do. Portraying to others your own personal value rather than the value of what you do is soooo much more important!

I once herd a quote that made such an impression on me it literally transformed the way I now look at work in general.

It was “The day you start working on yourself just as much as you work on your job, is the day you become successful.”

    Think about that….

And this all begins with your 5 Second commercial. We all don’t have much time these days. So when someone asks that question to you. Make sure you’ve got something ready to go that makes them think
“Wow, this person is really valuable (regardless of what you do). I wanna know more about them.”

Research shows 96% of people will form their opinion of you within 10seconds of meeting you. That leaves you with 5 Seconds to tell them about yourself and and other 5……well I’d spend it asking them what they do :)

You want your 5 Second Commercial the come across as being powerful yet modest, straight yet curious and emotional yet logical. hahaha how the hell can you do that I hear you saying.

Well luckly I prepared this one earlier:
“I help (emotional, modest) IT Professionals (straight) capitalise (powerful) on their lost sales opportunity (curious) so they can increase revenue and decrease stress and wasted time (logical & emotional).

    “wow, really?”

and then here comes the money question…

    “How do you do that?”

“argh well that’s a secret, I’d have to kill you if I told you that” hahaha
“tell me more about you do though”

Even if the person isn’t an IT Professional, you’ve grabbed their interest and more likely than not, later you’ll get. “You should speak to my friend Fred, he’s in IT and I reken he’d be interested in having a chat to you.”

    “really……”

    Wow, that’s a slick line.

I have been thinking about that very thing myself.

I came up with “I teach people how to use computers 24/7″.

Hopefully that will generate generate a further conversation!

Well you’ve got me intrigued Luke!

I always say “I help small business owners afford new cars and boats”. That always leaves them asking more!

I’ve used “I’m a weapons and combat systems engineer” which often raises a few eyebrows!

“I offer a place for people with more sense than money, to make a few bucks, and help the environment”

Well, that’s what I would say if I was ever in a social situation and was asked what do I do. LOL
