OK, so I ripped off the other thread that was started about Twitter, but have found LinkedIN to be a very useful networking tool.

With us small businesses all having some things in common, I thought it might be an idea to put it out there and see if anyone would like to make connections on LinkedIN.

If you seach LinkedIN, my name is Carl Quested. I will gladly accept invitations if you send the request as a friend and just make a note in the message that you are from Flying Solo.

    All the best to everyone

    Hi Hobbit,

I think LinkedIN is a slow burn. I have been using it for about 3 months. I use it for my day job, which is as a BDM for Iron Mountain. When I recently changed jobs, I updated my details on linkedIN and was contacted by 4 of my connections who were interested to learn more about my new services.

It is def a B2B tool, and should not be treated in the same manner as Twitter or Facebook. I also use it to impart wisdom (read opinion) in the answers section. This allows you to talk to people who may be in need of guidance in your areas of expertise.

There are also a heap of groups for particular purposes, one I set up is specifically for Young Entrepreneurs in Australia, so I get to discuss issues/ideas affecting this particular group.

I think like anything, you get out what you put in.

I tried to sign up once for LinkedIN following a friend’s advice and gave up after realising that my industry is not listed. There isn’t even an option to suggest a new undustry. That put me off a bit.

    Hi Everyone,
I have just sent out invites through LinkedIn to those that posted above – looking forward to connecting with everyone.

I too am looking to build up the connections list, and generally connect with others involved in small business – I am not actually sure how to find/get the direct link to my profile for connections, but if you search on my name (Jacqui Pryor) I will be there :)

    Thanks,

What a fantastic business you have! And such a shame linkedin doesnt cater for it. i wonder if theres an industry you can put it under just so you have extra web presence, links to your site, connections etc? There are these groups that i found so there must be some way you be listed under animals or pets http://www.linkedin.com/groupsDirectory?results=&sik=1296690438464&pplSearchOrigin=GLHD&keywords=pet Then just make sure your profile reflects clearly what your business is.

Do you have a business page on FB? We can all LIKE it if you like? Mine is http://www.facebook.com/modelsuccess

Yes i agree, it is very different to FB and Twitter. Linkedin seems to be very much profile building rather than business promotion, and B to B for sure. It hasnt yielded any obvious direct results for me (yet) but my partner uses it in IT and thinks its great.
I see it as just another opportunity for web presence i.e. when somone googles you or your business Linkedin will rank high so its an extra way you can be found, and a credible way people can read more about you which is seperate to your own site.

My industry type is also not on linked-in. If you think a little laterally about what you do you may fit into an option there. I used “Think tank” and my network got a kick out of that. At the end of the day the industry doesn’t matter that much (it only shows up as very light grey and very small anyway).

I recently listed my business on linked in and currently am proceeding to use it as a point of contact when canvassing my network or business opportunities. So far it seems promising, but only as one tool in a wider toolbox. :)

I’m also looking to expand my network.
