I’ve just created a new template document in Word 2010 and added “fill-in” fields which I’ve bookmarked and linked to a “ref” field to automatically populate the information from the fill-in field.
Works a treat and does exactly what it’s supposed to – except that when I open the template to create a new document my ribbon has completely disappeared. It’s not minimised – it’s not there at all… no tabs (File, Home, Insert, etc.), no sizing options in the bottom right corner. Just the ruler. That’s it!!
This is only happening in the template document and I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a template, or if it’s the field codes doing something weird.
Has anyone else had this problem, or can anyone advise how to create a template that doesn’t create a “naked” document.
Thanks!!

Up::0Hi Anna,
Sounds like a doozy! We’ll put a call out on social media and see if we can rustle up any template gurus for you.
Fingers crossed
JayneAugust 28, 2013 at 6:07 am #1148862Up::0Hi Anna
Happy to take a look at it for you if you like? I have seen that once before, can’t remember exactly what the problem was but happy to take a look for you.
Thanks
MarkAugust 28, 2013 at 8:08 am #1148863Up::0Thanks folks.
The lovey Brent from Ontrax Solutions has been in touch again (thanks Brent!) and we thought we’d resolved it… but hope was short-lived.
However, I have found two curious workarounds in the meantime.
1) Open the document, complete the fill-in fields, close/save the document and re open.
2) Open a normal Word document first (that has the ribbon and tabs) THEN create a new document from the template and it will have the ribbon (yet if I close the other Word doc and try to create a new document again, it will have no ribbon).
Not ideal, but at least it’s not too hard to open a blank Word doc before working in my template.
Would love to hear any permanent solutions. I’ve created many templates in the past and never had this problem.

Hi there
New to your forum – but hopefully I can help.I think your form will be OK – but suggest you try this:
1. Exit Word (via the File menu)
2. Navigate to your Templates folder
In Windows 7 this is: c:Users[username]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates
You may need to type (copy) this into your Explorer Address field as AppData is usually Hidden on most systems.
Just replace [username] with your username (no brackets)
3. In Templates you will see a file called Normal.dotm – rename this to Normalold.dotm – If you have Autocorrect etc or other default settings they will likely be stored in this file – but it’s now corrupted – so use the Normalold file as a reference to rebuild what you notice is missing from your new one.
4. Open Word, and Word will create a new Normal.dotm file. Your Ribbon should be back.Hope this helps

SuzyAugust 29, 2013 at 9:09 am #1148867Up::0Hi Anna
me againJust thought I’d check that you haven’t minimised the ribbon.
With Word open, with a document open – can be blank, press Ctrl+F1 on your keyboard – this toggles the Ribbon to be visible/hidden. You might have inadvertently toggled it to be hidden.
cheers Suzy
August 30, 2013 at 12:37 am #1148868Up::0Hi Suzy,
Thanks so much for taking the time to provide such a detailed answer. To answer your question, no, the ribbon isn’t minimised, it’s just completely gone. Here are screenshots of the difference between the one that has the ribbon, and the one that doesn’t:
As you can see, it’s not just the ribbon that’s gone, it’s all the tabs and any formatting options. Clicking Ctrl+F1 doesn’t make any difference.
The fact that I can click the Word icon in the top corner to close and save it, then have it reopen with the ribbon also makes me question whether it’s a problem with the Normal.dotm file, but I’m happy to give it a go (when I have a sec) and see if it makes a difference. Will let you know how it goes

Ohhh – no tabs and no ribbon is a different thing. Might be a corrupt registry key.
Try the steps in the below article and see if it helps.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
Some of these suggestions are a bit advanced – give me a yell and I can help via a GoToMeeting if you would like.
Before trying the hard stuff, here are some more quick suggestions:
Do you have addins installed? if so, disable them, and then restart Word.
Try the suggestions at this link from MVPsHave you experienced a security update recently? The last link suggests uninstalling the last security update you received.
Don’t worry, While it looks bad, it’s always resolve-able.
Hope this helps – and good luck with the new branding launch!
SuzyAugust 30, 2013 at 2:54 am #1148871Up::0@Suzy.. tried your suggestion, but it didn’t work. Again, I have no problem with opening Word and having the ribbon – it’s only if I create a new document from this template it disappears (unless I already have another Word doc open or close/save and reopen).
I’ve tried to create a new template in case it was something corrupt with this particular template, but am having the same problem.
*rolls eyes*
August 30, 2013 at 11:24 pm #1148872Up::0The customization which was applied to the ribbon is only for your own purpose as a user.
To customize a ribbon for a template, XML is used to retain the new tab on the ribbon – template specific (and always available) to base a document on.What is needed: CustomUIEditor: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc313070%28v=office.12%29.aspx
The XML is created on the template using the CustomUIEditor. Macros (sub procedures) are then/or can be used behind certain functions.
Contact: deirdre.claire@bigpond.com for further information.
I have created many such tabs on a variety of interactive automated MS Word templates.
August 30, 2013 at 11:25 pm #1148873Up::0Apologies – I didn’t realise it was just when this template was in use.
You can send it to me at suzy.davis@appsforoffice.com and I’ll take a look at it.
When I rebuild a template – I do so from scratch. And fortunately it doesn’t take as long the second time around because you are not having to think it out.
Quick rebuild:
1. Copy the content of the template, except the last paragraph mark, section breaks into a new clean (preferably virgin Normal).Virgin normal – Exit Word, rename your Normal template (described earlier) and Word will generate a new one next time you open MS Word.
2. Add in your Section breaks.
3. Ribbon and tabs still there?
If Not…
The cause is likely something you have added to your template, it could be anything like a corrupt graphic, table, or form control.1. Do a Quick Rebuild, this will get rid of any corruptions stored with the template
2. Create another new template but don’t copy the content in yet.
3. Copy the content over – preferably using Paste Unformatted.
a. Add graphics in from the graphic file – if you don’t have the graphic file, create one using Snagit or Snipping Tools. That way they will be a clean graphic.
b. Recreate tables.
c. Add in Form controls fresh, don’t copy them over.As you do each of these steps, be aware of the Ribbon/Tabs – you will eventually notice what is causing them to dissapear. if they don’t dissapear, it was some kind of corruption that occurred in your template.
My bet is on a dodgy ActiveX control that you might have used for your form.
Once the dodgy factor is in the template, it won’t, rarely will be fixed by removing them. You need to rebuild.
But what else were you planning to do over the weekend?
Hopefully wont take you too long and you’ll be back in action soon. Please send to me if you would like me to have a look at it.
cheers Suzy

Hi Anna,
Did you create (design & code) this template from scratch all by yourself, or did you use resources you found on the net? If the latter, then it is very likely that whoever put the code you’ve used together, could have also built in XML settings that affect the way Word’s CustomUI behaves.
So how familiar are you with the code you’ve used, and how confident are you of altering it to get rid of the bits causing you grief?
Word is not my choice as far as a development platform goes, because apart from its clunkiness, it also severely limits what you can and can’t do. You can achieve much more amazing results with Excel and/or Access, and if you’d like any assistance with that, just let me know what you’re trying to achieve, and we’ll take it from there.
