I am currently doing market research into a possible business opportunity. I am looking at creating a website connecting Australian businesses with Australian freelancers. A simple forum style website that businesses can post jobs on and freelancers can bid on posted jobs.

No commission per job would be charged. I would charge a monthly membership fee which would enable businesses to post as many jobs as they want, and to allow freelancers to bid on as many jobs as they want.

Does this sound like a website an Australian business looking to hire would be interested in?

Hi Jeff, did you realise that there are loads of these already? I’m assuming you are thinking of all businesses, not just designers? (Your website suggests a design interest.)

As my specialty is design, I can only use that as an example: free pitching is condemned by professional design organisations around the world.

All designers who belong to professional associations such as AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association), IA Illustrators Australia, Design Institute and the American Graphic Artists Guild – are asked not to work on spec nor bidding/pitching. A good article about this is here

So, to answer your question – there are a number of those type of websites already.

There are a lot of freelancing sites, though if you can create a unique one or something that is better then the others then I’d say go for it. Personally, I both freelance and look to hire freelancers and some of the sites I just don’t like, and I get picky about design too (which is dumb cause it doesn’t always mean the quality of the service).

So do some research and see if you can better the business. :) Follow your dream~

How would it be different to Elance, Odesk, Hire a Freelancer etc? They’re already there, established and proven. You’d have to be quite unique to compete successfully with them.

I agree.. With the sites like Odesk, Elance and Freelancer, you’ll have alot of convincing and promoting to do for users to sign up..
