Hi Everyone,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Eugene, I am doing research in a University but the idea of starting my own venture has been in my mind for a while already. As I am an engineer in electronics, I had a vision of a small firm making electronic devices. I understand that competing against big companies is a fruitless activity so one has to attract attention of the customers by offering some features that they can’t find in the available products. I was thinking of devices with smart, interesting design, really unique yet simple, quality products. Some kind of gadgets that are not essential, but are cool to have, like ipod docks and stuff alike.
For the moment I have just a very few ideas but loads of questions. First one is obviously if I should do this or not
My idea is to start slowly, make several prototypes, exhibit them on the website for people to judge and in case of interest from customers, rolling out the manufacture.
I am quite new to entrepreneurship so I can’t even word most of my questions! Although, I think that launching such a thing alone is a pretty complex endeavor. Therefore I was thinking of setting a small team of enthusiastic people with, for example, one more engineer and one designer. I was wondering what is a good place to start the search for like-minded persons who can share my enthusiasm. Is this community a right place for that?
Thank you for your attention, I’m really happy to join this place!
I will stongly appreciate all the feedback and advice! Cheers!

Would definitely do this. Quite cheap to set up a website and hosting and would be quite a fun experience I should think, in exhibiting your work. Worse case scenario, you have gained some valuable experience and have something to put in your resume + portfolio.
July 19, 2012 at 4:46 am #1111678Up::0Make sure you have IP protected before you start displaying or even talking about your prototypes because if you do get a great idea / product it will be stolen / copied very quickly without any form of protection in place.
You may want to check out Commercialisation Australia for some further info and possible support.

You sound so excited an driven, love it! Don’t let anyone kill that
Definitely do your research! It’s never too early to start investigating how to do things. This is definitely the forum for you.
Welcome!
July 19, 2012 at 6:53 am #1111680Up::0Welcome to FS,
I’ve seen innovations get initial funding by pitching a prototype or concept video on this website.
Willing participants then pledge $ so that they can purchase your product at a reduced price when it is developed. When you get your funding target in pledges you could then do a production run.
I dont know how it applies to Australian innovators, but it might be worth checking out.
All the advice above re getting trademarks/patent protection first is good.Good Luck…

I don’t think that I can come up with some innovations, so kickstarter is not really for me but for someones smarterAnd for the moment I don’t seek for funding, I don’t need much to get things started. I just hope that I’ll have fun designing all the stuff I have as sketches.
The one thing I could really use is a partner with similar ambitions and skills (higher skills even better)And I know that there are plenty of people who have really bright ideas as they publish them on the web, but I don’t see a lot of small buisnesses run by engineers! Perhaps, there are reasons for that, I don’t know.
Anyway, I plan to start gradually and hopefully you will hear more from me here (if anyone’s interested) as I make updates on my prgress.
Regards,
