All of us get off track, lose inspiration and find it hard to get started again after a break. So, no more excuses, no more procrastination, time to get into gear and move forward.

To help motivate, inspire and encourage you here are some of my favourite small business quotes:

“You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great!”

~ Zig Ziglar, Author, motivational speaker

Do you have an idea? Have you been procrastinating about starting your new business? As the Nike tagline says: “Just Do It!”.

People seem to make New Year’s resolutions and lists of things they ‘want’ for some time in the future. Why not do it today?

“Work on your business, not in your business.”

~ Michael E. Gerber, Author of The E-Myth

This is a mantra I have heard time and time again. It is really easy to try and do everything yourself. Some business owners try to review, oversee and control everything; that’s called working ‘in’ your business.

Step back and work on the bigger picture, ask yourself: what is the one thing I can do today to move my business ahead?  And that’s called working ‘on’ your business!

“Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.”

~ Warren Buffet

The price you charge should reflect your value; what ‘you’ add to your service and products. It should also reflect the value the market believes it is worth.

Never consider discounting your prices as this only compromises your brand. It also creates an expectation that your business can be negotiated and makes you look less professional.

“I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure. It is: Try to please everybody.”

~ Herbert Bayard Swope, Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist

I replay this one a lot in my head. You cannot and will not please everyone. People will ask for things that you could not even have contemplated and you’ll spend your time trying to accommodate them to the detriment of your core business.

Stick with what you know, what you do well and what your business and brand are about. Listen to customer requests as ideas may come for your business but do not feel you have to be everything to everyone or you may lose focus (and die of exhaustion in the process).

“Don’t let the fear of losing be greater than the excitement of winning.”

~Robert Kiyosaki, coach, businessman, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad

Most business owners had great ideas but were too scared to quit their jobs and take the plunge. I was one of them. I had a great corporate job in a top investment bank that was paying an excellent salary and, what’s more, I actually liked it.

But I also had an idea, a passion for my business that was eating away at me. When I look back now I can’t believe it took me two years to get up the nerve to start my own online law firm.

“Love what you do and do what you love.”

~ Ray Bradbury, Author and Screenwriter. (Also attributed to numerous others)

You have surely heard this saying.  Life is short and you spend one third of your life working so you need to love what you do and do what you love as this will lead to success in business and life in general.

“The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones that do.”

~ Anonymous

I. Love. This. One. It is my ultimate favourite. Never lose the dream. What more can be said?
