Business with a baby
Resuming business after having a baby was always going to be a challenge. But I was as prepared for it as possible… or so I thought.
Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s been about six months since I wrote about preparing my business for having a baby. So where’s that time gone? Well, I spent three months after that article still pregnant and waiting for baby to arrive and have now spent almost three months getting used to having a business and a baby to look after simultaneously!
I thought it fitting to do a follow-up piece to see how well my ‘preparation’ worked.
In the last article I was focusing on three main activities to help with the transition, and while outsourcing, communicating and organising all helped, I quickly learnt that really nothing could prepare my business 100 per cent for having to time-share with a baby.
Really it all started when Ruby (pictured) decided not to come exactly when she was due to arrive (she was nine days late) – so, right from the get-go the planning went a little out the window!

In saying that, I have learnt a lot in this time and hope to share some discoveries that could help others who are entering the world of ‘business plus baby’.
I quickly learnt that I had to let a few things slip a little. For me this has been social media involvement, blogging and online networking. These are now the activities that occur when time allows rather than activities that I made time for pre-baby (PB). My priority for the moment is now on work at hand and not in marketing activities.
I quickly learnt that, as a business owner, napping when baby naps is not as easy is it may sound. When baby naps, I work. Simple. Baby napping means that I can respond to emails; consult with clients and if I am lucky spend a bit of time on Flying Solo!

I have quickly learnt that a baby will wake up as soon as the phone rings or I pick up the phone to call a client. To help with this, I ensure my answering machine is always plugged in so clients can leave detailed messages for me to return as soon as possible.
I have quickly learnt that I can actually get a lot done in a really short amount of time, and can do so at all hours of the day. My clients are no longer surprised at emails that come in at 6am.
I absolutely still believe that outsourcing a few things and communicating with my clients have helped make my transition from business owner to business owner and mum easier. My clients have been super supportive and understanding – especially in the first few weeks after Ruby was born. Additionally, I have actually hired my first employee! This is proving the biggest help, as it provides a couple of solid blocks each week where I know things will be looked after and I can simply put my attention where most needed during those times.
I’ll be honest: I actually thought it would be far easier than it has been to juggle a new baby with the business. Foolish I know. But now that all is said and done I don’t think I would have it any other way or do anything differently. The experience has taught me a lot about myself as a person, a business owner and now – a mum!
