Hi All, I’ve been reading some of the comments on debt recovery for small business. The one thing I can’t find advice on is where you can name and shame people who have never had any intention of paying. I have had debt collectors, small claims courts, etc after a few people and the normal thing that comes back is he/she has no assets in their name, they deliberately put their holdings in a parent or other family members name. So I’ve ended up out of pocket for using the debt collector and the original debt. As there are sites, including consumer protection that have no problem naming and shaming small businesses who don’t pay, why isn’t there one for people who contract you for work? I believe a lot of them are serial bad debtors who keep getting away with it because they think (correctly) that most people will just give up. As a small Air Conditioning company, we can’t afford this, especially when parts are involved, although I now insist that the costs of parts are paid up front, that way we only lose the labour content, which still boils my blood as my Husband works hard for a living, so why should he carry these bludgers. Anyone else having the same frustrations, please?
Are you in Sydney KRAC? My mum needs her air conditioner re gassed, she’ll pay upfront

I know a guy who went back to the owners house when they weren’t home to deconstruct their patio after they didn’t pay up and he found out off their next door neighbors that they are serial offenders, I think he had in his trading terms that all parts and materials belong to his company until all monies are paid. I know this method wont get your money back but I’d like to think that it would be a good cure for boiling blood.

Due to labor costs in Australia i always figured the best selling point someone can have is that your product increases productivity you can have the cheapest formwork materials possible but if it still takes 4 guys half a day to install like the rest of the products out there wheres the advantage?

I think this kind of marketing has a lot of potential. Its still a bit backwards sometimes though, i bought a pair of sunglasses online a few months back and sunglasses are still being suggested to me on facebook etc

Its good to know that pretty much all my potential suppliers will be expecting a FOREX payment its one thing less to worry about, i just have to research some FOREX companies that will deal with the little guy. Lol yeah your right I really don’t want to be swiping my card in a cab where I’m going. Can i pick up the hard currency i need from a FOREX trader before I leave or will i have to send myself payments to a local bank once i get to where I’m going so i can pay for cabs and what not with paper money tied to the business? I guess its all just a tricky stage for me at the moment as I don’t have any turnover yet so any expense at the moment is coming out of my personal bank account. Next week will be the week of opening a business banking account, getting a business credit card and hopefully opening up a FOREX account and loading them all up with some capital so its easier to keep track of my expenses and book keeping.

In terms of AMEX as a credit card, 3% of the official rate is pretty good isn’t it? The only query with that is don’t a lot of retailers also tack on a surcharge for using AMEX or does that just tend to be an Australian trend? If it is I could just use my business visa debit in Australia when paying online etc.
My international flights are already booked (and are a matter for my accountant in regards to how much of them I can claim as the trip as a whole will be a bit of business and pleasure) but I definitely know i need to take some domestic flights once there strictly for business purposes so enter the business credit which i haven’t actually got yet because those comparison site are overwhelming and I have little faith in the summary provided on each card (and probably a bit less faith in banks as a whole).

Sorry guys if i always seem vague I guess i could write a novel if i gave very specific details, I know it wouldn’t bother you HarryLuke as you are also a purveyor of the long post :)

I’ve always seen it as a beautiful thing when i travel to another country and I’m sitting at a beach restaurant, usually consisting of a couple of plastic chairs, a tarpaulin, an esky and a bbq and the owners are there doing a bit of cooking and serving in between playing with their kids. They might be poor by our standards but they seem richer in many other ways. And its as if some people look at them and think “omg these poor people we need to give them sky scrapers, 6 lane freeways and a whole bunch of pointless crap to worry about”. Nah.

I’m wanting to import textiles, home wear, leather goods, womens fashion etc from developing countries around the world. Ive been around and there is some good quality stuff about being produced by some talented people and i want to explore getting it to the australian market for sale. I want to keep all my business ethical in terms of sourcing products which means i want to be spending quite a bit of time in certain regions in order to forge good friendships/business relationships with my potential suppliers and truely understand their production process rather then just flying in for 4 days, hammering out the lowest price without considering where my product is coming from or without considering who is making it for how much or little per hour, then checking out. My tax issue would be the blurred lines of personal/business expenditure whilst overseas for potentially months at a time, and i know you advised me to avoid mixing business with pleasure when overseas procuring but i dont think i can do it so it would be good to know an accountant who would be able to give me some good advice as my current accountant does books for local businesses whos owners would probably be lucky to leave sydney once in a while

ok so i think i may be able to simplify this without including foreign currencies in my books can someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

If i utilize the services of a forex payment company in Australia, can i say pay someone through them, then so long as the receipt in foreign currency and the receipt from the forex company stating how much currency i ordered/sent through them match up i can enter the cost into my books as the amount in AUD that the forex company charged me?

    Thanks
