Thanks Dave, it was great to see the notification from you this morning and I’m sure everyone wishes you all the best with your future opportunities. I’ve made many great connections from Flying Solo, some of those that I still speak with almost every day. There’s no doubt that there’s a lifetime of knowledge in these forums and you just need a bit of time to dig for it. Stay in touch!
May 4, 2020 at 1:32 am #1223091Up::0I wouldn’t add it with tags.
Normally I’d add it something like
/melbourne/st-kilda/
/melbourne/box-hill/Most businesses are trying to rank their home page for the core city terms too. That’s OK if you don’t ever plan on expanding to another state but if you do having the core capital city pages is a more ideal approach.
That way as an example Plumber Melbourne goes to /melbourne/ rather than then home page. This needs a bit of foresight and is hard to charge if the home page is already ranking for these terms.
I’ve definitely seen cases where a client has ranked the home page for their capital city and therefore they can’t add in the primary location to the URL for that page and it can hinder results in comparison to competitors.
There’s also cases where a suburb name could be in two states so having the
is a good combination. September 23, 2019 at 1:11 am #1221282Up::0I’ve got a strict “no dickheads” policy these days and I reckon you can almost immediately tell the warning signs when you pick up the phone and chat to someone like that. I trust my gut 110% these days and it feels off (or you smell a rat) then it’s most likely so. Rarely does it get proved wrong.
I too have been using the “Oh sorry, we just took on a major job with a big client and unfortunately wouldn’t be able to comfortably take on your project at this point in time”.
When it’s your health involved like that, it’s very poor form.
September 23, 2019 at 1:06 am #1221204Up::0Best thing you can do is get some SEO training, John Romaine has some agency based training but all of it would be very applicable to you as a small business also. I’d highly recommend you take a look at it. This would pay for itself very quickly, John is very highly regarded around these forums.
September 23, 2019 at 1:04 am #1221234Up::0HubSpot claims to be the “all in one” solution because they have content marketing and SEO integrated as part of their systems. If you’re looking for a solid CRM with marketing automation then I recommend Active Campaign, it’s basically just as powerful for a fraction of the price and without all the additional bloat that hubspot provides. I think they quoted me 15k for the year or something and it would be the same if i referred any of my clients to them. Crazy.

Create amazing content around your industry. Users online will link your site automatically if they find it useful.Rarely have I ever seen this work – “amazing content” is very subjective and open to interpretation.
Plus it doesn’t matter if your content is amazing, if you don’t put double or triple the amount of time and effort into marketing it then it’s not going to get backlinks naturally.
If you’re waiting for links from your “amazing content” then you’ll be waiting a long time.
Would love to see examples if anyone has such content.
February 4, 2019 at 11:28 pm #1218684Up::0Like I said, if you’ve got any proof from real life examples (not a blog post you’ve read) then I’d love to take a look. The advice I’m providing is through my experience of what’s worked for my customers and own personal websites, not hearsay i’ve read somewhere.
It’s an effort vs return thing, I’d encourage anybody writing blog posts to promote across social platforms, that I can agree with you and it can’t do you any harm. Facebook groups i’ve also had a lot of success with from a traffic perspective. But i’ve never seen any of that social promotion at a small business level to a) generate backlinks or b) improve rankings or organic performance so my advice is to put your time and money where it will.

@John Romaine[/USER] said.
Unfortunately like John mentioned it’s hard for business to foresee the expansions in the future but I’m a big believer that the home page should primarily be focused on brand related search terms and maybe the primary service category but should not be optimised for locations.
Locations should be built of
/brisbane/
/gold-coast/
/sydney/or alternatively use states instead of cities if you’re a business like Jim’s mowing for example that is everywhere.
Once the home page is optimised, it’s painful to make the switch.
Alternatively you just try adding on the /brisbane/ to the site and optimise that rather than worry about changing the home.
