    Hi Bettina,
If your looking for help with Adwords I can highly recommend (from experience) Melinda at http://www.clickwinningcontent.com.au.
I’m sure you’ll get some great tips from her blog, and she also does training sessions which are very valuable for getting more from your campaign.

I’d also suggest looking for opportunities to interact on job hunting sites and forums to build your reputation. This should also help with search engine optimisation building links from relevant websites.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Glen,

Start by touching base with friends, family and work colleagues, they already know and trust you. This will kick start your portfolio.

Build relationships (and trust) with complimentary businesses (ie copywriters, graphic designers, SEO, SEM folks). They already have a network of potential customers for you!

Social media is a great way to network without leaving your desk;) Twitter in particular was a major growth driver for me.

And It’s definitely worth working on Local SEO, businesses close by will be more likely to become customers,

    Hi Warren,
Thanks for posting. I plan to keep it fairly focused on eBooks but like the idea of a mindmap, so I will definately check it out!

    Cheers

    Hi Muges,
Don’t stop trading on ebay, you’ve built a following there – instead use it to build traffic to your website.
When you post products to customers include a note about the website and an incentive to visit (ie discount on first order, valuable content, specials).
I’m not sure if it’s still possible but create a link in the auction to invite visitors to your ebay “About Me” page. On your about me page link to your website to increase traffic.

We run three SEO packages to cater for different budgets, so you can definitely start on a smaller scale and stop/start as budget allows. Your rankings and search traffic don’t stop when your SEO campaign does. Even just running an SEO campaign for a few months will provide long term traffic.

    Cheers
    Chris

The other HUGE advantage to checklists & process documents is when you start to outsource or build a team.
They hit the ground running and know exactly what is expected. You don’t waste time repeating yourself answering the same questions & asking for the same corrections.
My first hire prompted me to get moving on process docs & checklists and they’ve had a massive impact on efficiency and consistency.

    Hi Jason,

Networking and collaborating with other businesses in the same industry is a great way to grow your business. There are several other “web companies” I regularly talk with, sharing ideas, processes, tips etc.

If this business you’ve mentioned made contact by pretending to be a customer, (lying!) there is no way I would trust them to share & collaborate.

    Hi Emily,
As others have said, making mistakes is just human. Don’t dwell on it or beat yourself up about it – take a step back and think what could be done to minimize the chance of it happening again.

Would a review checklist help pick it up? Can the task benefit from a process document or template to ensure no steps are missed? Are there tools that could automate this task/step?

Partners are great for support, but tend to glaze over with the details as they are not experts in your field. I’m sure at times my girlfriend hears “website blah, blah, SEO blah blah”;)

By networking with business owners, particularly in the same industry, you can share tips, tools, processes and get feedback,

    Hi Paul,

Reliability is trending as #1, and people will expect this no matter what you charge. So be sure to price yourself so you can provide a highly reliable service. This will pay off in the long run as happy clients will refer you to new businesses.

    My ordering:

    1. Reliability.

    2. Free phone & email support.

    3. SLA’s (various guaranteed response time for different events).

    4. Response time (how soon they can attend site).

    5. Distance from your business.

    6. No contracts.

    7. Low hourly cost.

    8. Fixed cost per month –unlimited usage.

    9. Small business specialist.

    10. Fix rate fee per visit.

    11. Size of the IT Company.

    Good luck!

    Chris

@Fiona This is a question I hear often, enough to warrant writing a blog post about it!

Here’s a post I wrote explaining that there are basically 4 options for hosting a business blog. As others have stated the best situation is to have your blog hosted with your website on a subdirectory.

WordPress could be installed on your hosting to give you a great blogging tool. A WordPress theme could be built to match your ecommerce template so it would appear consistent.

    @Michelle
If you copy the content posted to Tumblr across to your website, Google will view Tumblr as the original source, so there will be no SEO benefit. I’m not sure how many blog posts there might be but try to have as much original content on your website as possible.

You should rewrite any posts you transfer to make them more unique.
Add links in every Tumblr post back to your website service pages/new blog posts (SEO benefit). Then write a final Tumblr blog post talking about your blog moving to your website, so Tumblr visitors know where to find your latest content.

Then you just have to maintain one blog & maximise the SEO benifit.

    Hope that helps,

    Chris

    Hi Kirill,
Link Wheels are a longer term strategy, you need to build up these web 2.0 sites and allow time for the Google sandbox effect (Google gives more authority to websites older than 3-6mths). Google may not have indexed all the sites yet, so you may still see some gains, but one week is a short time to expect results from this.

I suggest waiting another week. If you still don’t see the ranking you want, combine on-site optimization with some article marketing (best value link building). A few 100 submissions should have you ranking quickly for low competition keywords.

And also periodically feed the link wheel hubs with new articles to get more value from them,

    Thanks
    Chris
