I remember during the first lockdown (or second…they all blur in to one down here in Melbourne) I got a call from a lady who wanted a resume done ASAP. She asked if I wrote resumes, and I said I did. She paused and said, “You don’t sound very professional.” Excuse me? “It sounds like you’re in a caravan or something.” I said I was working from…[Read more]

Your website also needs good content that targets your business’ keywords. If you haven’t got keywords or keyphrases in mind, it needs to be hooked up to Google Analytics or Google Search Console so you can generate some options. I could take a look and make some suggestions – just slide into my DMs.

Please, don’t do this. It’s the epitome of corporate cringe.
The amount of business cards with “President and CEO” when it’s a one man band…it just seems desperate.
I would put down the service I provide (for me, that’s Copywriter) or just Proprietor.

Tom Valcanis replied to the topic Writing a radio ad for a small local business – share your tips! in the forum Marketing mastery 1 year, 7 months ago
Advertising on radio does sound old-fashioned – but there is plenty of opportunity to use targeted audio ads for apps like Spotify, Tidal, or Omny. Or, you could record ads for niche podcasts. iHeartRadio/DAB+ and other internet radio stations run the same sort of advertising for much cheaper – so the skill of writing a radio ad isn’t just limited…[Read more]

I think it depends on the complexity of the site – if you have many different apps and widgets that all interconnect with one another, a dreaded software update can break one or more functionality. If you aren’t an expert in what does what, it definitely pays to have a web developer on call to help fix anything that might fall over.
With my…[Read more]

Former .au Domain Administration employee here…
Getting a .com.au offers many protection benefits that .com doesn’t.
1. First of all, all net/com/.au registrants must have an ABN. This is as much consumer protection as it is business protection. If a .com.au registrant scams a whole lot of people for example, they can be traced back and be…[Read more]

Welcome!
I use Rounded – it’s designed for soloists and it’s easy to use (I say that as a total mathsphobe!) You can even link it to your bank account so you don’t miss a thing.
All the features you need, none that you don’t. Simple!

A business sells products or services.
A brand sells consistency.
I just had a look at your website and there’s nothing that sticks to me. Myer is “my store.” Coke is “real magic.” Swimwear Shack is… ???
It helps to have a mission statement and vision statement. What you strive for and what you aim to represent. I Sell Words because my words…[Read more]

A great formula for figuring out profitability is Delta 4. You ask people how your product/service would help them solve their problem and rate it out of ten. Then ask them about the current solution and have them rate it out of ten. If the difference is more than four, you have a unicorn idea on your hands. Think of the gulf between booking taxis…[Read more]

Tom Valcanis replied to the topic What are your top tips for free marketing? in the forum Marketing mastery 2 years, 1 month ago
I always say set aside some time writing authoritative content and posting on social media. Writing blog posts (assuming that’s something that doesn’t bore you to tears!) regularly helps your SEO – and you never know when a post might catch on. Building an email list is also something to consider.
These are all “free” in terms of having no…[Read more]

Buy as many lists as you want, sure. But you will have to individually mail/call/email them and ask them to opt into your list.
The Spam Act 2003 specifically prohibits businesses from sending unsolicited commercial email. You can find out more at the Australian Communications and Media Authority (I’d link it, but they don’t seem to be allowed…[Read more]

Tom Valcanis replied to the topic Link Building Strategies For Our Ecommerce Site in the forum Marketing mastery 2 years, 2 months ago
Having a solid content strategy can help you beat the majors. Consistent, informative, and authoritative content. It took Savvy, one of my clients, almost five-ten years to get where they are through producing solid content on their site and on others. To quote a great 90s haircare commercial: “It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen.”

Tom Valcanis replied to the topic What is the number one reason you don't invest in marketing? in the forum Marketing mastery 2 years, 2 months ago
As someone who writes SEO content for a living, a lot of people don’t see immediate returns on investment and therefore think it doesn’t work. It’s like any facet of business – most overnight successes take years of strategy and consistent building before it pays off.

In the creative space, your output has a “paradox of advertising advertising.” In simpler terms, the advertising for yourself is also advertising what you can do for other people. So *your* website has to be all killer, no filler to begin with.
The first few months of a creative business is tough because there is a lot of competition. However,…[Read more]

Tom Valcanis replied to the topic New company transfer domain names? in the forum Tech talk 2 years, 6 months ago
You will have to contact your registrar in the .au commercial space (.com.au and .net.au) to complete a registrant transfer.
You won’t experience downtime because you aren’t changing hosts etc. auDA has more info: https://www.auda.org.au/au-domain-names/domain-name-help/transfer-name-different-registrant

I’m not sure what you can do in terms of trademark, but I can advise you when it comes to domain names.
There is no hierarchy of rights when it comes to .com.au and .net.au domain names – if this person registers your business name’s domain name first, he gets to keep it. He can also keep it under the close and substantial connection rule. So if…[Read more]
