Hello!
So I seem to have missed the ‘hype’ of Flying Solo and have decided to jump on board and see how I can assist business owners!
We’ve been in business for 20 years, I’ve been at the helm for the past 10 years.
I own Bsale which is a business and franchise for sale website – so i am surrounded by business owners, business brokers and franchise groups. We are focused on the buying and selling part of the business journey. Our role is primarily to shine a light on the opportunities and provide useful articles and guides.
Our catchphrase is “find your next business venture” because over the years we’ve come to realise people rarely just own one business. There are a lot of entrepreneurs who buy and sell or owners who expand and acquire. People may get tired of their current industry, sell, and look for a change. The business journey rarely has a start and stop point.
Welcome aboard Vanessa!
It definitely sounds like you’re in an interesting position helping people find businesses.
Hopefully you find the forums helpful and can provide some insightful advice for others!
Cheers,
JonoForum AdministratorJune 4, 2021 at 12:01 pm #1227987Up::0Thanks @jonow-15,
When I click “forum profile” with the view of adding my signature, I get a “404 – Page Not Found” error I’m afraid.
Not sure if/how it can be fixed, but you might like to know that I got an email earlier notifying me you had tagged me in this post – and, the email went straight to my junk file. Previously it would arrive safely in my inbox.
Hey @jacquipryor, thanks for flagging these bugs, that 404 issue you were experiencing should now be fixed if you’d like to give it another shot.
Good to know about the junk email issue, we’ll look at changing the email formatting to prevent this.
Forum AdministratorJune 2, 2021 at 10:36 am #1227943Up::0Like a few other long time members, have just checked back in for the first time in a while to see what had been updated on this thread. In doing so, it seems we no longer have the option to ‘like’ another member’s post? (does this mean we’ve lost our trophy points?! 😉 ) I was going to ‘like’ @jamesmillar’s post above but no option to do so.
In terms of general feedback around functionality, I can see there’s now a right-hand side bar section containing a few ‘most recent posts’, but no reference to the actual forum topic it relates to. For example, I am seeing “ABN or ACN / Insurance / Packaging Service for SkinCare by Mr.Chips” but no way of knowing whether this is a general start up question; a money matters question; a find help question etc. I also think displaying only 5 recent posts is too limited. There’s more recent posts so some members will be missing out having theirs eye-balled I suspect. I’m finding this version of the site more difficult to navigate than the old platform in terms of finding/contributing to relevant posts/questions.
I know signatures are on the list, but certainly think that remains a lacking function at the moment.
I do hope to see a few things ‘fixed’ soon and hope that allows for some discussions to continue in the way they used to. It’s been a great resource over the years and I would like it to continue being such.Hey @jacquipryor
Thanks very much for the detailed feedback, it’s very much appreciated and we’ll work it into our list.
With regards to your signature, it can be edited here: https://www.flyingsolo.com.au/my-account/
Go to ‘forum profile’ then ‘profile’ then ‘edit’ and you should have a signature section. We’re working to make the navigation of forum profile editing easier.
Thanks,

Forum AdministratorJune 1, 2021 at 4:53 pm #1227933Up::0Hi JonoW
Thank you so much for replying to my post.
Just a clarifying question: shinehypnotherapies or shine.hypnotherapies
(a) what is the best protocol when getting an instagram handle – I thought usually without dots, dashes , numbers it says to visitors to instagram that i picked the first handle off the rank, so looks better?
(b) i was just concerned that the first one (no dot) might look too wordy and unclear for print/poster purposes but mindful that getting clients from the print poster purposes will be a low number compared to click through links online digitally?Yeah i’d say avoiding dots, dashes and numbers is a good start point, but potentially also looking to shorten the brand name if possible.
Could you shorten it further for your handle to Shinehypno? People will still see your full business name on your profile but then it’ll be easier to type in if they see it in print.
Forum AdministratorJune 1, 2021 at 11:58 am #1227923Up::0Hi @tashy8
My preference would be without the full stop if they’re both available, as you mentioned this is easier for people to find if they’ve seen your instagram handle in print or elsewhere.
In regards to the 2 businesses, it doesn’t really sound like the gut health side of things fits under the umbrella of “hypnotherapy” so it may be out of place here. Potentially it’s worth investigating a brand name that can encapsulate both areas of business under one banner.
Something like “Shine Health & Wellbeing” or anything along those lines lets you cover a broader range of services than just hypnotheraphy. This way you can focus your time on building the following of one page and giving it full attention.
Hope this helps set your direction for social!
Forum AdministratorJune 1, 2021 at 11:09 am #1227921Up::0Seeking suggestions on sources for stationery, promotional materials & merchandise for a business. Specifically:
– Business cards
– Brochures
– Calendars
– Letterheads
– Stationery (E.g. pens illustrating business name)
– Clothing (E.g. T-shirts / hoodies)
– MugsLooking through reviews of online providers, I’ve seen quite a few negative reviews due to issues with materials including
– Leaking Pens
– Small fonts on labelled products
– Misaligned printing
– Printing on the wrong side of productsWhat is your experience with these or similar items? Do you go through one or more online providers, a local stationery outlet, or do you produce some of the materials yourself?
Keen to hear your responses.
Initially I tried large print companies like officeworks for promotional material but found a smaller supplier that was more flexible and understood in more detail what I was looking for. They could also provide design support to make sure everything was properly aligned prior to printing.
I found larger suppliers more likely to print without flagging potential issues.
The company I had used is called Little Print, they’re based in Melbourne so I’m not sure if this helps. I’d take the time to go meet a few in person to discuss it with them, prior to making any commitments.

As requested issues I see with your downgraded forum, you may want to talk to your developers about what user testing was done, I have an idea.
There is no – New Posts option.
The @Dave option doesnt work
No quote previous post option.Must admit I gave up trying any further if they cant get basics right, well you know my approach from previous comments.
My login problems were that it wouldnt accept my normal password, I tried a couple of forgotten password attempts, finally got an email on the 3rd attempt.
Just reaching out and checking on progress…. Post started about 2 months ago, and to be honest if there has been any improvements they must all be back end..
Is it just me, or are the vast percentage of posts still spam and self promotional…. with no ability to report as spam either and sit on post for quite some time?
Would be great to get some more updates along with seeing if this forum is getting the love it deserves?
Cheers
Hey @lucasarthur
Thanks for checking in and apologies for the delay in updates, we’ve now managed to get on top of the majority of the spam issues by filtering out a number of troublesome IP addresses. This should greatly improve the post quality we see across the forum.
What functionality would you still like to see across the forum? The majority of the features from the previous forum plugin have been replicated in the new version now. We’re still keen to get more feedback on features that you’d like to see in the forum though.
Another positive note is that we have a new community manager starting next week who will be working on the Flying Solo platform, making sure that Flying Solo receives lots of love.
Cheers,
JonoForum AdministratorMay 31, 2021 at 9:42 am #1227890Up::0If you are serious in business there is no such thing as a side hustle, it is either a real business or it is a failure. Sadly its people like Kochie who set people up to fail, by saying they can pretend to have a business. You are either committed or a failure.
Hey @BB1,
I think a lot of people go in without plans for it to be something serious, more out of a personal passion for something. I’ve got a side hustle as a digital consultant that I have no plans to scale and generates some additional income for me outside of my full time job.
I really enjoy it and have friends who undertake similar freelance projects outside as a side hustle.
Forum AdministratorMay 31, 2021 at 9:35 am #1227889Up::0Hi @mr-chips
Unfortunately I can’t offer much insight on point 1 or 2, but for 3 and 4 I’d say VISY would be worth contacting. Their recycled products are environmentally friendly (this should be a big consideration when choosing packaging) and locally made. They can also offer cardboard, bottles and other options for getting you up and running.
Companies like Synergy Pack and Vision Packaging both seem to have good eco friendly options and most likely smaller MOQ’s.
Forum AdministratorMay 31, 2021 at 9:20 am #1227888Up::0Hi @mibc , welcome to the forum.
+1 for above about Xero, they’ve got a pretty amazing product and would certainly need accounting skills.
In regards to breaking into management, have you considered taking on management courses ahead of applying for new roles to help you make the shift? AIM in Melbourne have a load of different management related short courses that could help.
Also, have you browsed roles on Seek and found any desirable ones or applied for any? I feel like there’s no harm putting yourself out there for new roles to identify skill shortcomings, it’s a good way to define your path and discover areas of interest. Potentially while you’re locked into fulltime work, using that time to try expand your skillset can be really valuable.
Good luck!
Forum AdministratorApril 14, 2021 at 10:27 am #1227010Up::0Hey @bb1 welcome back!
Good point about the report spam button, i’ll flag this one with the developers.
We’ve made great progress on a bunch of other changes to return functionality of the previous forum and to improve navigation for users. The admins are definitely still about!
Forum AdministratorApril 6, 2021 at 11:19 am #1226878Up::0Trying to be interested and invested in the forum, although the lack of anything appears to have dissipated quite heavily with very few returning, contributing or even starting new conversations related to what the forum (IMO) was about..
Any updates? Or has the forum changed and/is changing so much that its wiping the slate clean?
Its quite sad really, was a good source of banter and collective knowledge… 🙁
@admin, is it worthwhile persevering? or is it beyond the forum of old and heading to a new role that is more monetised as opposed to helpful?Hi @Lucasarthur,
We’ve implemented a couple of changes to decrease the spam post volume, we’re still trying to finalise this so that less slip through the net.
In regards to conversations/post volumes, we did experience a drop off in organic search traffic from launching the new forum which has now been restored. So hopefully with that we’ll see the conversations start kicking back off.
Forum signatures are top of our priority list as well as improving the navigation and notification prominence for the forum. Please feel free to shoot through any more feedback and thanks for flagging the issues you’re noticing.

Forum AdministratorMarch 29, 2021 at 11:50 am #1226195Up::0I have to say that for years I was dead-set against renting software rather than buying it … and we use a lot of software … but when the software makers move to a subscription model you really have little choice.
Of course you can look for alternatives but if you’ve been using a specific programme for years there is a learning curve when you switch to something else. Do you have the time and patience to do that?
I certainly didn’t and now I’m quite happy that my partner was quite prepared to move us to monthly payments.
It’s worked well for us and paying a subscription rather than buying outright means that one day I just might change all my hardware over to Mac and that was never an option when we would have had to spend thousands to replace the software as well as the hardware.
Yeah I can’t really fault their subscription platform, not the cheapest but lets you jump between computers easily and the cost is pretty modular so you can chop and change what platforms you need at the time.
Forum AdministratorMarch 26, 2021 at 3:01 pm #1226175Up::0I’ve heard frequently about the importance of having a group of top 5 people that inspire you the most and give you the most to learn from. I’m realising now that as much as I love my friends they’re not similarly growth minded and would rather just drink and play video games, which has its time and place for sure, but I need to branch out.
I’m trying to find out, how did you find your top 5 people or find like-minded people that ended up forming close relationships with? Is it always a mentor-mentee arrangement? Is it possible to find through extracurriculars?
Much thanks for your input!
For inspiration I’ll often lean on people that I’ve worked with in previous roles or they’ll be friends that are in a similar profession.
It is tricky going from a friendship to asking them for professional support. I think it’s a matter of testing the waters and see if they’re interested in providing help.
