In the Spotlight: Ella Hamilton, pirkxIn the Spotlight: Ella Hamilton, pirkx

- September 1, 2020 3 MIN READ

pirkx has built a tech platform that brings employee benefits to everyone, however they work. Small businesses and sole operators don’t have HR departments to take care of their physical, mental and financial wellbeing, so pirkx does it for you for only $6 per month to ensure that nobody has to miss out due to cost.

We ask the tough questions of Ella Hamilton, pirkx

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt this year?

Not to let my ideas tumble around in my head. It is better to get them onto paper or run them through with someone so that they evolve more quickly. The same goes for my daily work. I like to have a “to do” list so that at some point I can say my work is done for the day.

What’s your proudest moment?

My proudest moment was when I taught myself how to renovate a building as the builder – with no experience! I did the design, sourcing and hired the tradies. I proved to myself that I can learn something new and see it through. This gives me confidence to take on new things. Pirkx has only been launched here in Australia since July, so it’s a time where I need to feel a lot of courage that I can do something big, complex and new.

What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?

Fighting against my own expectations! There is always more I could do but I need to be more patient with myself. I would like to hire people and scale up but it’s not the time yet.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

Control your costs. It’s ok to grow your costs if your revenue base is growing more quickly.

Where and when do you have your best ideas?

I get my best ideas when reading on the internet. I read widely and my mind is always ticking over. When I’m reading I often ponder about how a concept could apply to my business.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Know your strengths and when to involve other people so that you don’t get stuck and can keep moving forward. Maybe someone can see it more clearly than you or have the skills that you don’t have. A huge shout out here to Carlie from The Creative Assistant for creating my marketing materials!

What website do you visit every day?

I always check www.news.com.au and www.theage.com.au as I find that gives me a good quick read on what’s happening in Australia right now.

What talent do you most wish you possessed?

I wish I was a natural storyteller. I have a tendency to think in bullet points, and most people relate better to a narrative.

What’s one thing about you few people know?

I love gardening. I just like watching things grow and change.

What is the one regret you do not want to have in this lifetime?

I don’t want to be a quitter and to make excuses for why I didn’t persevere.

What would your mum say is your greatest strength? And weakness?

She would say my greatest strength is that I’m generous and that my greatest weakness is chocolate!

What inspires you most about your work?

I believe in pirkx because I spent 18 months doing the research into what people need to sustain wellbeing. It has been designed to meet the needs that I found. I can feel motivated and proud to be providing a service that can really help people.

What do you wear to work?

Clothes 🙂

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

I believe in pirkx because I spent 18 months doing the research into what people need to sustain wellbeing. It has been designed to meet the needs that I found. I can feel motivated and proud to be providing a service that can really help people.
