We ask the tough questions of Melissa Gerke

When did you know you wanted to start your own business?

When I didn’t enjoy teaching anymore and wanted to be independent, doing something I loved (writing).

What’s the best bit of feedback you’ve ever had?

You’ll never be 100% ready, just do it.

What’s your proudest moment?

Strangely enough, applying to pay GST. It just made me feel like a real business.

What’s your favourite film and album?

I really like Drive, with Ryan Gossling. The best album in the history of music is Disintegration by The Cure.

What’s one thing about you few people know?

I play the clarinet badly. Only the neighbours know.

What is the one regret you do not want to have in this lifetime?

That I didn’t give something a go that I really wanted to try.

What book has had the most influence on the way you run your business?

Traction by Gino Wickman. Some of it doesn’t apply to soloists, but the bits that do really helped me run my business, as a business.

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

I’m an SEO copywriter. I have a Biological Science degree and was a science/maths teacher for too many years to mention. So I like to write copy for websites that require technical jargon translated into readable content for their ideal client.
