We ask the tough questions of Dale Mackney, Bluewell Insurance Brokers
When did you know you wanted to start your own business?
When I realised I could do things better than the people who were employing me. I was sick of going to employers with sound business ideas only to get shut down – I mean we were getting all our business through the internet yet they didn’t even want to build a website! When all hell broke loose with the GFC in 2008 and I was told my pay was going to be cut by more than half to what basically amounted to minimal wage, I handed in my resignation and started up my own company.
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
To quote Homer Simpson: “Don’t say revenge, don’t say revenge … Uh revenge?”
My original motivation was to grow bigger and more successful than the old company I worked for, so every time I started to lose momentum I would remember them and boom! Full steam back on track.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Staffing, it’s always an issue to get staff train staff and retain them, our industry is very competitive when it comes to recruitment, so we are always looking inward on how to make staff happy.
What’s your proudest moment?
Getting one of my websites www.publicliabilityinsurance.com.au on to page one of Google for the search term ‘Public Liability Insurance’. I have been working towards this for ten years so when it finally happened, I was very pleased.
What’s your number one way to wind down?
Well it was a bottle of red a night, but I started realising that was unsustainable. Now I go to bed at 8pm so I can get up early to go for a 10 km run or lift weights. The benefit being, I’ve lost 26 kgs from the latter.
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
Very few people in your life genuinely want to see you succeed. People with fear about doing business will tear your ideas apart and tell you that your ideas won’t work and attack you from all angles. Their attacks tear off little chunks of your confidence day by day. Block them by any means necessary and do what you need to do.
To get big, you have to be big. No matter how good your idea or how strong your motivation, nobody in corporate Australia wants to do business with the little guy, so grow, grow, grow.
