Side hustles are booming in Australia. According to the ABS 1 million of us took the plunge last year alone. And for good reason – the premise is very appealing: make money on the side of your ‘real’ job doing something you love.

Sounds simple in theory, right?

But if you don’t have a lot of spare time or money to invest in yourself, how do you get your side hustle off the ground?

Nicola Moras is a social media and online visibility expert and author of Visible, a guide for business owners on how to generate financial results from social media and digital marketing.

She says these are the 5 crucial steps to get cracking on a successful side hustle.

1. Commit to marketing your business

If getting your soy candles into 5 star hotels is your priority, do something every single day that helps you reach that goal on social media. Eg, make a list of hotels on your hit list and reach out to them.

2. Rally your cheer squad

A cheer squad is your support crew – the people who want to see your dream succeed. A mentor or someone with a thriving business you’d like to emulate is a great member of this team. All it takes is an email or a shared cup of coffee to get this relationship started.

3. Create an efficient CRM (that’s business speak for email management system)

For example, say you have side-hustled a range of swimwear and you know your customers love it, invest in great photos that showcase them. Do something unique that makes your products stand out.

4. Rockstar your brand

It’s one thing to believe in yourself but you must also look the part. Put your best foot (and head) forward by getting a great logo or headshots designed for your business to use on your marketing campaign.

5. Keep pushing your sale button

Don’t be shy. Once you’re up and running keep reminding people about your products and where to buy them. Push out your product/service and messaging with simple instructions on how to follow through with the sale.

With these fundamentals in place you’ll be well on your way to side hustle success. And the best part is you can do all of that from the comfort of your – kitchen table, garage or home office.
