What does your morning routine look like? In this series we ask our soloist community to share the little rituals that help kickstart their day. After all, research tells us that the way we start our day has a big impact on our productivity levels.
Do you action/plan/do anything specific to prepare for the morning the night before?
BecauseI have an 18 month old my “work day” doesn’t really start happening until 10am, when his nap time starts. But I tend to action out my big 3 goals for the day so that I know during those (fingers crossed) 2 hours sleep I have set tasks that I need to get done in that time.
What time do you wake up? And how do you do it? Ie, alarm, someone wakes you up or it just happens naturally.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I set an alarm clock, as I mentioned I have an 18 month old so I have a human alarm clock, who usually wakes me up at around 6:30am. Also, my husband is an electrician and being a tradie out west he likes to do his main work in the morning before it is too hot, so he will wake me at 6:30 if Will happens to sleep in. I wish I had more energy to get up and go for a walk or something but at this stage I am happy with my 6:30 starts.
What is the VERY first thing you do after you wake up? If you eat, what do you eat?
If my husband hasn’t got our son out of bed, I will do that and while I am making breakfast for him and a coffee for me. I will check if I have any important emails and then check any incoming notifications on the socials. I am not a big breakfast eater and working from home allows me to graze a little if I need to rather than having set eating breaks. This is probably not the best option, so don’t take this as advice. But if I do eat it’s usually some oats or a piece of toast just to fill the belly a little.
What is your first drink of the day? Where are you when you’re drinking it?
Moccona instant coffee, and usually either at the dining table or sitting in the lounge room while William eats his breakfast. I am not a morning person so I need my morning coffee to warm my soul before I can be a real human!
What part of your morning routine makes you feel the best?
That first smile of the day from my son is probably the best it makes running your business from home all worth it to get those moments with them.
What part of the routine could you really live without?
Being the first one to get up in winter to turn on the heater in the lounge room.
Describe your ideal morning
My ideal morning would be my husband bringing me my coffee, while I am sitting on our sun soaked verandah (that doesn’t exist) looking over the river, while my son actually eats his breakfast without throwing it on the ground… we can all dream right?
