You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?
Scratch my dog’s belly. As the world’s only Slogan Sniffer Dog, Sammy is an important member of the Slogan Creator team. (She said I could pay her in scratches if I gave her a page on the website, which I did!)
Would you describe yourself as a technophobe or technophile?
Hmmm, let me just check with my carrier pigeon.
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
My partner because of his courage and determination through adversity. 12 years ago he was bitten by a mosquito that carried the Ross River virus. As a result he had post-viral chronic fatigue syndrome for 11 years. After being unwell for so many years, he’s now fit and healthy and has returned to his favourite sport of competing in triathlons. When he crossed the finish line of his first come-back race, we both cried.
What’s your proudest moment?
When my teenage son said to me: “I love you more than McDonald’s fries.”
I was also really proud to see one of my slogans on a TV ad. The client was Economic Security 4 Women, and the slogan was: Equal pay is just common cents.
What’s your number one stress relief tactic (keep it clean!)?
At the moment, Zumba. (Although I’m sure it’s very stress-FULL for anyone who watches me. I even scare myself sometimes.)
What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Writing articles for Flying Solo for years and years. It has given me the wonderful opportunity to work with so many fabulous Flying Solo community members; and the privilege of working with the awesome Flying Solo team.
What’s the one resource you’d never be without?
What’s one habit you’d like to change?
Consuming so much chocolate.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Can you stop at just one chocolate biscuit/savoury snack?
Only if someone told me that the entire packet of chocolate biscuits was laced with poison. Even then I’d be inquiring about dosages, antidotes, hospital waiting times etc.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
“Specialise in what you love”. (Thank you to my friend and mentor Andrew Griffiths for that advice!)
What inspires you most about your work?
I really do believe that a slogan is a seed that can help a business to grow. I love writing them and I love seeing them make a positive difference to people’s logos and brands.
In the case of my business, slogans can also make a difference to the world, because with every slogan package that a client purchases, I facilitate a Kiva business loan. Kiva loans help to eradicate poverty by providing financial assistance to business owners around the world, particularly in third world countries.
To me, this means that my humble business and every wonderful client I work with can change someone’s life (and perhaps an entire community) forever. Not bad for one ‘little’ slogan!
