The book that has had the most influence on the way I run my business is the The Long Tail: How Endless Choice is Creating Unlimited Demand by Chris Anderson.
This story is applicable to all businesses but for a marketplace business this is essential reading and it captivates our approach to accessing the long tail of the demand curve as opposed to the traditional high volume head of the curve.
After reading we looked at all the factors that can influence customer choice. The real estate market has traditionally been serviced poorly and there is an awful lot of room for improvement. There are so many factors that go into finding the ideal workplace aside from just price and location, we decided to also consider who our customers will work alongside, the ecosystems we could create and the collaborations that might evolve from them.
The book challenges how traditional businesses will evolve to succeed when customers have so much choice and any reader will take away something to challenge and help grow their business.
There hasn’t been any one book that has had the most influence on the way I run my business. I have read chapters from many books, but never read the whole book front to back. The chapters I have read, however, have provided me with the practical tools and information I needed.
Some books include The 4 Hour Work Week, The e-Myth Revisited, Start, Run & Grow a Successful Small Business, Unleash The Power Within, The Naked CEO, The Virgin Way, Million Dollar Women and Women Entrepreneurs.
BUT, the book I have most resonated with is Thrive by Arianna Huffington. That book had the most influence on me last year and I read it from front to back.
