We ask the tough questions of Tammy Tansley, Tammy Tansley Consulting
You’ve got a free half hour during your work day. What do you do?
Read, or go for a quick walk.
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
People who despite difficulties, just get on and do it. I find their energy and passion contagious and it puts the day-to-day snags we have in life into absolute perspective.
From a work perspective, I love the work of Seth Godin, Adam Grant and Brene Brown.
When did you know you wanted to start your own business?
I have always wanted to do it. When the right time presented itself I knew it was a “put up or shut up” sort of scenario! I have never looked back.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt this year?
After a couple of very big years pursuing specific goals (writing two books amongst them), this year has been a good learning around just letting things be – exploring opportunities as they arise rather than working towards something specific.
When someone I was coaching told me I was the best gift that their boss could have ever given them.
What’s your proudest moment?
Pushing “go” on the first print run of my book.
What’s your number one way to wind down?
Hot bubble bath, glass of wine and a book.
What’s your favourite film and album?
I am a big Paul Kelly fan – love his Merri Soul Sessions album
What’s the smartest bit of marketing you’ve ever done?
Built a good website from the beginning. So many people find me through the website, or use it to check me out.
What’s the one resource you’d never be without?
Kindle! How good is it to have your whole library on your iPad? I love knowing that I have that resource treasure trove literally at my fingertips wherever I am.
What or who has the most grounding influence on you?
My children ground me. They make me try and be better every day. I figure if I am away from them then I need to make those hours count for something.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Being smart with my hours. There are so many things I could do – I have to be very organised to get through the things that will make a difference to my organisation. It’s tempting to spend time doing things that don’t add any value but which I enjoy doing!
What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?
Best thing – living my passion, my values every day, doing what I want to do and making a difference in the world as a result of that.
Worst thing – there are so many things I want to do! Finding the time to do them, in the right order can be a challenge.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
Say yes before your brain has a chance to tell you why it’s not a good idea.
Where and when do you have your best ideas?
Bath! Or when I swim. Both quite inconvenient for capturing the ideas!
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
Have someone you can bounce ideas off (either in a mastermind group or a coach) and use the wisdom of a great mentor. Know that it can be hard, but that you get better at it being hard over time..
What websites do you visit every day?
Xero – I love it! My website. Social media. I have a series of blogs I read (for inspiration). Websites like Forbes/HBR which always have interesting and thought provoking articles.
What is the one regret you do not want to have in this lifetime?
We live in a time when literally anything is possible; so I want to make sure that I take every opportunity I can and give things a go. I don’t want to die wondering “what if”.
What inspires you most about your work?
The ability to make a difference, whilst being true to myself.
What do you wear to work?
When I am out and about with clients, usually I wear black or navy blue with brightly coloured accessories. When I am working from home all day, it’s usually gym gear as I try and sneak in a walk or pilates session during the day.
What do you love most about running your own business?
The flexibility ….
