Ever wondered how you can help businesses that you value and want to see succeed (other than simply buying their stuff)? Giving virtual high fives just takes a minute and costs you nothing, but it is a great way of supporting small businesses.

Online reviews are some of the most powerful marketing tools on the planet. Get a few 5-star reviews under your belt and all of a sudden Google takes notice, and you start to appear higher in search engine results.

Then people take notice. They read the glowing reviews and decide to give your business a try, and then refer you to their friends and family.

While small business owners mean to go out and ask people for positive reviews, they get busy just running their business, so getting reviews is pushed down the to-do list, about on par with cleaning behind the fridge.

So, what happens is that the one or two customers who got the small business owner on a bad day get online and dump their unhappiness all over the business. A 5-star review helps small businesses with Google, brings in new customers and makes them feel all warm, fuzzy and valued.

And as a bonus, when you high five a small business, you will not only be helping them, you will also be helping to make your patch of the world a happier place.

Create a Festival of High Fives

If you want to go all out, you can create a Festival of High Fives, where you go on a rampage of niceness for a stack of your favourite small businesses.

High five your local coffee shop, tradies that repair things for your car or home, your favourite checkout operator at a big box retailer, bloggers that you love to read, places that you stay on your weekend away or local suppliers that keep your business running.

Hold a Festival of High Fives for the members of your local networking group, Chamber of Commerce or Facebook group.

Add it to your diary, and high five a few businesses each week.

A couple of provisos

Don’t lie in your review. Don’t pretend to have bought something if you haven’t.

However, even if you haven’t bought something, you can still comment on things you have directly observed – like the person’s approach to their business, their willingness to help or share information, or the results you have seen them achieve for their clients.

Tips for an awesome review

Keep it simple and meaningful. Here are some question prompts you can use to help work out what to write.

  • What service or product did the business provide for you?
  • What are a few features that you liked most about the product or service?
  • What results did you get from using the service or product?
  • Are there any specific people you would like to single out for praise?
  • Who would you recommend the product or service to? Why?
