Morning rituals: I’m a small business owner, this is how I kickstart my day

According to the experts what you do first thing in the morning has the greatest impact on the success of the rest of your day. In this series we asked our soloist community what rituals they use to kickstart their systems before getting on with work for the day.

Do you action/plan/do anything specific to prepare for the morning the night before?

Each night I write a list of my most important tasks for the next day. If a helpful resource for a coaching client, or an idea for a wellbeing article pops into my head, I’ll jot it down so I don’t forget. I also choose my clothes for the next day.

What time do you wake up? And how do you do it? Ie, alarm, someone wakes you up or it just happens naturally.

I’d like to say I wake up naturally to the sounds of birds … But what really happens is I wake up at 7am to an alarm clock set to a classical music station.

What is the VERY first thing you do after you wake up?

The first thing I do is drink a glass of water and then have a shower (and resist the lure of my phone!).

What is your first drink of the day? Where are you when you’re drinking it?

After a glass of water, I really enjoy an English breakfast tea with milk. I have this in my living room where the best light is, or sometimes at a local café that has beautiful teapots.

What part of your morning routine makes you feel the best?

Two things: exercise and reading. I start my day with either a body balance or barre class or with weights at the gym. If I don’t have time for this, I’ll go for a quick walk around the loveliest streets in the neighbourhood. Moving my body in some way is such an energising way to begin the day. I also love to read a few pages of a new personal development or positive psychology book – excited highlighter in hand! Learning really inspires me and wellbeing science informs my work with clients.

What part of the routine could you really live without?

Switching from English breakfast tea to green tea would be healthier, but black tea with milk is so cozy!

Describe your ideal morning

On a regular week day, I’d wake up to a blue sky and walk to a body balance class that’s led by my favourite instructor. Then I’d have tea in the beautiful garden of a local café, while reading a fascinating book. And of course, I’d have an inspiring coaching session with a client.
